So I got this firearms a little ways back. Aside from me test firing it I had really shot it to much till now. I wanted a full size pistol again but was on a budget. I also like to be different and decided to go with this SD9ve. So far all I did was add the Apex kit on the cheap and put a steel blacked out Ameriglo rear sight on. Did light stippling on the front and back strap. One of my goals this year is to get good at pistol shooting. I'm a rifle guy. Ever since the Marines. So I want to get good at pistol and actually running the gun not just target shooting. I want to learn to be good at reloads and all that. So I am going to just test this guy out. See how it performs and its reliability. I don't think I will clean it till I'm well over the 1k mark. So far I just have a little over 300rds through it. Really just the Tula brass max in a can. And some stuff I got at Walmart cheap I think t was ZQ. So far I just have one light primer strike with the ZQ stuff. The only other thing is I'm not sure if it's this one mag or I'm holding the slide release down but it fails to lock open on the last round I believe with one of my
Mags. But not a huge deal. I hear a click and reload. I'll keep posting on this if anyone cares. Maybe new shooters looking for a budget gun.

I bought one of these from a member here a while ago. I have been busy and have not had a chance to test it out. I am very interested in your test results.

So far I love it. I Don't claim to be an expert on shooting unless it's geared towards rifles but it fits my hand well. The m&p style trigger feels good for me. My only other full sizes were a G22 and 92fs.

Got it nice and hot today and dirty. Put 350 more through it at a fast rate. Running some drawing and reloading stuff. Not a hiccup. Some more blazer brass, white box and pmc. Flawless. So far the only thing is my hand covers the slide release do it won't lock for me 50% of the time. Still havnt cleaned it too

I'd bet its holding the slide lock down that's causing the failure to lock back. I had the same problem with my SD its not even close to as stiff ad the M&P slide stop and its about twice the size. So ya it doesn't take much just your thumb slightly touching will do it

Oh yea I know it's that. The dam thing is huge

Yup its my only complaint about it, I try to keep my thumb down in that groove, besides that I love it especially with 17 round prebans available. I've got about 2k through mine with no issues

Wish I could find pre bans. Yea it's cool though I'll just know it's empty or treat it like a malfunction and tap rack bang it but the slide will lock open so I'll know

I've heard good things about the latest ones. US DoD bought 25,000 or so to give to the Afghan National Police (after the bitching about buying 100,000 Glocks from Glock Europe for the Iraqis). I talked to some of the USASOC trainers. They were reasonably impressed. Most of them switched (in part to show the ANP that they trusted them).

I do the same thing with my M9. Because I point both thumbs at the target, my off-hand thumb rides the slide lock. I just know I have to rack the slide.

Might have to look at getting one of these too.

Aloha

I thing those are sigmas that they got. The SW9ve

I believe it was newer SW9ve. Rob Langdon was the "Congressional Liaison" for S&W at the time and pointed out the issues with the Glock purchase and shamed Congress into giving extra money for SW9ve.

ya there not that easy to find. I just posted a WTB here and was able to get 2 in about a years time

This is one of the most underrated pistols on the market. A great value and not too different from the Sigmas that preceded them. At least one instructor at the S&W Academy used one as his teaching gun. The SD's are not substantially different from the guns that were part of the Afghani military aid package. You could do a lot worse and I would definitely take one over an M9.

yes they really are a great value, budget gun. I just got the recent FS email and there on sale for $279. luckily I don't live close because I really want to go buy another one.

I have a bud that has one and it's his carry. He loves it, I shot it once and felt great in hand, he says he has 5k round through it and 0 issues or malfunctions. I believe him..

I have the Apex trigger spring kit in it now. I know they make a flock like trigger. apex is coming out with their flat faced trigger for this very soon. I'm interested in this option

I have the apex enhanced trigger. its nice, definitely a little crisper than the stock,. but if you bought this for a budget gun I don't think its worth the $

Aren't the kits like 20-25$ on Amazon? Worth it to "fix" the 10lb ma trigger imo.

Honestly I had the 40 with the apex kit still didn't like the hinge and just got away from the 40 round. Will be picking up the 9 tho someday I love the way they look and for a "non" customizable grip I thought it was pretty comfy

I love mine. The Shield trigger is much better and I'm much more accurate with that gun but still...the SD9VE is a bargain.

1000+ rounds, not a single failure and I hardly clean it.

The trigger does eventually smooth out a bit. Not something I can make any crazy long distance target shooting with but at self defense distances it's very acceptable.

I'll kick in my 2c. I just traded one. I had put about 1500 rounds through it. I had it about 4 months, and it was my first non-inherited handgun. I loved it, but hated the trigger, so I put in the Apex, and that was a great trigger. Never had a single failure, and it shot great (although I didn't). Shortly thereafter I bought a gen to Glock 17. I like the trigger on the Glock a bit better then the Apex, because the Apex is a bit floppy with longer uptake, but in actual shooting (not dry firing), I did not notice much difference. I shot a bit better with the Glock, but I don't know why, because the perceived recoil on the SD9VE was noticeable less. In fact, imo, (which is worth nothing), I thought the Smith was a better gun then the Glock - nicer shooting, lighter, better ergos (much better).

So after getting a bit comfortable on these two (neither are carry guns for me, too big), I traded/sold both to try a H&K VP9. I was looking for the P30, but none were available (from an immediate gratification perspective) and I came across the VP9, which I was not familiar with. What I liked about it is that it is basically the Glock manual of arms, with different (better for me) ergos - more like the SD - and I wanted to try and HK anyway, to see what all the hoopla is about.

I love it, and think I am going to stick with the H&K for this form-factor/caliber (I am not a huge collecter, or I would have kept all three, as they are all really excellent guns - in my noob opinion - and all really fun to shoot). This is also my home defense option (the Glock was a gen 2, so no rail, and I like the option of a light for HD).

However, although there are differences, and the HK has some additional features, and a great fit and finish, and is perceived, therefore, as a "better" gun to some, in my experience, there is no significant difference in quality or shoot-ability. The HK has tritium metal sights, interchangeable back, front AND side grips (which I don't need, as stock config is perfect for me), and some other features, as I mentioned, but otherwise, I kinda wish I had just kept the SD and saved the $$ -- but not really, LOL - as there is some intangible quality to the H&K that I really dig the most, out of the three. Also, the ergos/feel are unique compared to these and other full-size guns I have experienced, and preferable for me. But if I were going to get a HD 9mm and was not worried about irrelevant "coolness" factors or fit and finish or ergo subtleties, I would just get the SD9VE, throw the Apex kit in it, and be very happy.

There is a lot of competition in the full-sized, striker fired 9mm format (wish the Walther PPQ was mass compliant, btw) -there must be dozens of options. From my limited experience, the S&W SD9VE is as good as any (except the trigger) - and I realize that this is supposed to be a budget, bottom-of-the-line option. But in fairness, I have done a fair bit of shooting with a few other brand's version - Glock, H&K, Sig, the M&P (doesn't shoot any better, and the trigger is better, but still not great of the two I way prefer the SD).
