Purchased a SA 1911 in 9mm from another member here and quite happy with the pistol with one exception, upon reassembly the slide stop is a bear to replace. I need to depress the detent/plunger with a toothpick to get it back in. I'm not a novice to the 1911 pistol,I own several others and have no problem with replacing the slide stop. The pistol looks to be shot very little so maybe it needs more break in but I don't like to apply undue force on things as well. Does anyone have a Springfield Armory 1911 that has the same problem and what did you do if anything to correct it.

Tools and techniques

(No such problem with my SR1911CMD, but...)

If you find yourself blowing your toothpick budget, there are tools for that.

Other people use a guitar pick (or credit card, but sounds thick) between the slide stop and plunger. (Looked for a photo of that, but kept getting Robert Johnson).

On the other hand, it has been said that some plungers need break-in, which could be helped by lubrication (and I think cleaning; especially the inside of the tube).

The High Road: 1911 reassembly slide stop problem - help.

Because a little bit of un-flushed grit could make that awfully rough.

ETA: Olde Net Wisdom (2012) claims that Springfields are notorious for having long plungers. Your mileage may vary.
