I picked up an old Savage model 3 for my nephew and I am trying to narrow down the date of manufacture, but I'm not having a lot of luck. It is before serial numbers so that's not the way I'm going to find it. Here's what I know:
-Manufactured in Utica, which means pre-1946 according to what I can find. Full text is "SAVAGE Savage Arms Corporation, Utica NY, Made in USA MODEL 3"
-Stamped with a circled 14 to the right of all the company info - appears to be a proof mark
-Overall length of the gun is 41 1/2"
-Barrel length is 23 3/4
-Has grooved walnut stock
-Metal butt plate
-Bent steel trigger guard (as far as I can tell - the other option seems to be cast and it doesn't look like cast to me, but I'm certainly not an expert on knowing the difference).
-Front sight has gold post, rear sight is flat top open sight.
I searched all over the web and found conflicting reports regarding which lengths were manufactured when, etc. Anyone who knows of a somewhat definitive site or where to go for info please let me know.
Sorry if this is a dupe, but I searched with the search feature as well as site:northeastshooters.com and couldn't find anything.
Any help with this would be great - I'd love to tell me nephew all about the history of the gun when I give it to him for his birthday.
