Hi All, I joined the site a few months back after a friend didn't stop talking about it everytime we hung out. I'm just getting time to read some of the post here as I started a new job shortly after joining- great site so far! Anyways to the question: I want a savage rifle in .223. They have so many choices for this caliber, but I have narrowed it down to the 25 Lightweight Varmiter (with thumbhole stock), the 10FP, or the 11BTH (with thumhole stock). They range in price from $593-$631-$657 respectively on http://www.savage-rifles.com/category/1387-Savage_Arms_223_Remington_Rifles.aspx Does anyone have experience or imput on these models? Any other models I should be considering? Is there a noticeable accuracy advantage with a heavy barrel vs. a medium barrel? And finally is the 60 degree bolt on the 25 Lightweight Varmiter worth it if I plan on putting a 44 or 50 millimeter objective scope on it? Thanks for any and all imput on this.

I have a 10FP in .223 w/ accutrigger. I love it. A couple few NESers have shot it as well.

I have an aftermarket stock on mine, a bell & carlson A2 as I found the Savage Stock uncomfortable to shoot on the grip angle.

After the stock, scope & rings, my rifle is just at, or below $1k

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of the heavy barrel ones or package series.

10FP, 12FV or 12 Series Varminter (1:7 twist for heavier grain bullets) or 12BTCSS (thumbhole)

For the money you are looking to spend, you should check out the CZ527 Varminter (Walnut). Super rifle. Mine has a 1:9.5 twist. Great for bullets up to 65gr. (heaviest I've loaded) The single stage trigger is outstanding. It has a CIP chamber, so military 5.56 ammo can be used and the warrantee covers it.

I topped mine w/ a Sightron S2 6.5-20x42mmAO

You may want to check out the Howa heavy barrel also. Mine is in .308, but they come in .223 also.

The thumbhole stocks can be uncomfortable. I have smaller hands and short fingers which does not lend to the thumbhole stock well.

I only have experience with the 10 FPs. I have one in 223 and the other two are 308s. My only complaint is with the stocks (synthetic) they are kinda flimsy. I have and HS on one and am working on a Mcmillan for another one. Savage was supposed to be coming out with the "Accustock" which was going to adress many of the complaints but I have not seen one yet. But out side of the stocks they are very accurate rifles out of the box and any of the models you stated would serve you well.

+1 on the CZ527... I have one in .223 with the HS Precision Kevlar stock, set trigger, 1:9 twist and heavy barrel. Easy to shoot and very accurate. We were shooting it today at 250 meters with ease.

FYI I've seen Chet'd shoot a ragged hole with his Savage 10fp at 100 yards. It is a tack driver and an excellent choice as well.

Many great choices... good luck!!!

Look at the four seasons website. They have the 110 with 3-9 mounted and bore sighted scope leather sling and accu trigger for $540.00.

I haven't run into anyone who has a Savage 25, yet. It sure looks like it's based on their rimfire receiver, though. If it is, I'm wondering if they pinned the barrel in like they do with the rimfire calibers.

If you get a Model 10 or 12 and run into trouble with a large diameter scope, extended bolt handles are available, and are user installable with an allen wrench. I have a 10 FLP in 308, and a 12 in 223 - love them. Can't shoot as well as ChetD yet, but it's certainly not the rifles fault. [hmmm] If you want the thumbhole stock, I'd try it to see if it's comfortable for you - there's not an easy fix if it isn't.

I like heavy barrels, myself - how much do you plan on walking around carrying this rifle?

Nothing wrong with CZ, either. Better looking rifles than Savage, I think. Not that I actually own a CZ; I do have 4 Savage bolt actions.

Thanks for all the responses. The CZ and Howa both do look nice, but I'm set on a Savage. Thanks KMM696 on the point that the Savage 25 may be built similar to their rimfire receiver- I was trying to figure out why id toked different than all the others. As for the question on how I may be using the rifle, its going to be 95% range use, maybe even some local competition if I'm good enough, and perhaps a far off future hunting trip where you can actually hunt with rifles. I have one more question I noticed in further research: Some 2009 models feature the new AccuStock from Savage. Does anyone have experience with this? It seems to be on the 2009 10, 11, and 16 series. Thanks for all the advice, its greatly appreciated. Here is the company site on the AccuStock with video http://www.savagearms.com/accustock_watch_it_work.htm
