I just got a set of fancy target sights from the CMP, a Redfield International rear, and Redfield Olympic front.

The front came with only one insert, a post style, so I want a bunch of globe inserts of various sizes. I understand that they're not all interchangable, is there a cross-reference of what brands/models fit other brands/models?

The clear plastic inserts with a hole drilled seem pretty sexy, are they all the great, or is it a gimic?

Are the mounting dovetails standardized? The base of the front sight is this shape:

Will any front sight base that looks like that fit the sight? Obviously the bottom contour has to match the barrel. I assume there are clamp-on types (that don't require drilling/tapping)

The rear sight didn't come with an aperture, but it looks like I can get a basic one for about $12, assuming I get the thread right. The interweb suggests there are fancy, and super fancy options, too, like variable apertures places for colored filters, or lenses, or other stuff like that. What's the advantage of colored filters? Are adjustable diopters worth hunting down or the money?

I think the Refield Olympic fronts are 18mm. So any 18mm inserts will fit. I like the "floating" look of the clear inserts, but that is personal preference. They will come in a set of several sizes.

There are clamp-on mounts for the front. You need to know your barrel diameter.

For the rear, get an iris at a minimum (adjustable aperature). Gehman makes one for about $50. Colored lens? Maybe if it's not too much more.

The International is a good sight.
