I got this 12g from my friends dad for 100$ with leather case abd hardshell case and wanted to know a few things about it.
I was told its a mosberg 500 that was sold under a different name.

I know nothing about chokes and stuff like that.
I want to buy a barrel for it so I can Safely shoot slugs or any thing out of it . What type should I look for.

Also there's this ......
amuveveg.jpg

He said the saftey is broken , but its been so long since he used it GE forgot why he taped in the fire position. It will dry fire and cycle rounds . I had a few dummy rounds to test the action out .

Also for the love of god I have no idea if the choke is rusted on what. Should I be able to remove it ?

Most Western Field shotguns were manufactured by Stevens, while a lesser amount were made by Mossberg, and even fewer by Noble. They were shipped to department stores, for sale, when America was free. The choke is adjustable, and I don't know if it's readily removable. Value is probably $200-$250.

ETA Soak the whole muzzle, choke and all, in Break-free for a few days, and work it loose.

Per some websites, made by Mossberg for Westernfield. I think they were sold in Caldors/Sears/Montgomery Ward. The ABD in the Model is the indicator of which store sold this gun. That is all I know. $100 is a fine deal if it shoots and is safe.
You can get parts here to fix the safety: Havlin Sales & Service - Mossberg Gun Parts

So is it a mosberg ? Lol

I was leaning to buying a barrel vs sawing it off . From every thing I've seen online with disassembly videos its has all the same parts internal parts of the mossberg 500, or the look the same at least.
I soaked the choke with some seafoam so ill let it sit overnight again and see what it does.

My friends dad was told he could get $200 for it but new if he gave it to me I'd def use it. 100$ was cause I've been friends with his son for 21 years lol. So ill keep it.

My only other shotgun I have it's my grand dads Remington semi auto sportsman 58. Which I take shooting once and awhile.

Had a choke similar to that on a Remington 20g. It was very accurate with any bird shot and was nice in the field for adjusting between shooting pheasant or getting into a covey of quail in tight spaces and being able to open up the bore some. You can safely shoot slugs through it on any setting but I can tell you mine was accurate to about 6 feet at 50 yards. (had to get to about 25 yards before I could hit a 4x4 sheet of plywood 4 out of 5 times)...so would not recommend it for slugs unless you want to use it for a home defense scenario where the barrel is touching the guys chest. Mossberg 500s are pretty common, so find someone that has one or a gun shop that has one and see if the barrels are interchangeable before you purchase a barrel. Slug barrels should be fairly available if it is indeed the same as the mossberg. $100.00 was not a bad buy. Mossbergs are cheap guns but they are pretty reliable and you don't have to worry about scratching them in the field.

It's just a plain ole rebranded mossberg 500

the things are actually really easy to strip and more either he lost the ball bearing for the safety or the little plate.

I just chopped the C-lect choke off and had it threaded cost me like 50$.

you got a little lower than average price on it ive seen 500's go for around 150$ used and in good condition. No way i would have given him 200$ for it especially with the rust and the safety issue. Some knock mossbergs as cheap and rough mines been around since 1978 and used by numerous people in my family. We have beaten the shit out it and it still runs and guns.

Back when America was America and not Amerika, and all sorts of stores sold fire arms, Western Field was the name used by Montgomery Ward, not just for guns but for all kinds of outdoor equipment. You could even order them in the mail from the "Monkey Wards Catalog" before the GCA of 1968.

Now the one I have is a Mossberg and I am willing to bet that yours is too. Sears which was Ward's biggest competitor sold virtually the same shotgun under the Ted Williams name as well as other sporting goods. If you went to JC Penny you could get the same gun under the name JC Higgins. These were plain, no frills models, not as finely finished or blued as the factory branded stuff, usually with birch rather than walnut stocks, but they were tough, functional, reliable guns and more than a few are still around. I know this has to blow some of your minds, the fact you could go to Sears or Penny's and buy a gun, but it's true. You see in America we valued gun ownership and so did major retailers, but that was America and not Amerika. You have a great relic from a formerly great nation, alas.

I never heard of Western Field used by any other retailer than Wards but this is anecdotal. In any event you got a good deal and a decent shotgun. Pay a few bucks to get it fixed and you will still come out ahead.

Update: If you google Montgomery Ward's Western Field you will find many helpful websites including one with a chart listing all WF models and makers. For some reason I can't copy URL on Tapatalk.
