I have a purchased a Savage 12 F/TR and am looking for some suitable glass to top it with. I will be using it for target shooting, hopefully out to 500yds, should I find a range to accomodate. Looking to spend $300-$600. Anybody got advice?

Well, for a fixed power scope I'd go with one of SWFAs Super Snipers. Availible in 10x, 16x, and 20x - they seem to be selling rifle specific kits now as well. I have one of the 10x on my Savage 10FLP, and like it a lot.

For a variable, the only current ones I have experience with are the Bushnell 4200, Nikon Monarch and Swift. If you're looking in the $300-600 range, than you probably don't want the Swift. Mine isn't a bad scope (for a 17HMR), but the glass is nowhere near as good as a 4200 or a Monarch. Either of those will work well, and are available in enough different models to keep anybody happy. Both of mine are 4-16x.

No personal experience, but the only complaints I've ever heard about Leupolds were based on price.

SWFA runs a very active optics forum, which is worth checking out. Since SWFA sells almost every brand out there, they don't try to guide or interfere with the forum. I've bought from them a couple times - no problems. Check out their Sample List site, too. Overruns, returns, refurbs for sale!

If you are going to shoot F/TR then get a scope with all the power you can get. 20X is a little on the low side.
