Kay Clark-Miculek Takes Overall Title At The Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Series Louisiana Regional

SEDRO-WOOLEY, WA — Miculek wins! When most people hear that they assume it refers to the legendary wheel-gunner Jerry Miculek whose prowess with a revolver is well known throughout the shooting world. However, at the 2008 Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Series Louisiana Regional, the Miculek in question happens to be the revolver master’s better half, Kay Clark-Miculek, who not only topped the entire field but set four new women’s world records while doing it.

“Kay is the most accomplished woman shooter in the world having won numerous regional, national and world titles in several shooting disciplines. She has won the Steel Challenge an amazing six times and with her record breaking run on Outer Limits, Kay now holds all eight women’s world records. Kay and Jerry are equally gifted shooters but this weekend Kay showed she is first among equals,” said Michael Bane, host of Shooting Gallery on the Outdoor Channel and expert Steel Challenge observer.

Kay won the Open Division Speed Shooting and High Overall titles by 2.95 seconds taking the lead over husband Jerry on the stages Outer Limits and 5 To Go where his uncharacteristically poor runs gave Kay a 5.41 second advantage with three stages remaining. It was a deficit Jerry could not overcome.

Kay finished the match in 94.75 seconds and Jerry came in second with 97.70 seconds. Both set world records in the process with Kay beating her own women’s world record on the stages Showdown, Speed Option, Smoke & Hope and beating two-time Steel Challenge champion Athena Lee’s longstanding record on Outer Limits. Jerry set a new world record on Pendulum previously held by past Steel Challenge champion KC Eusebio.

Rounding out the top five in the Open Division were Reed Vestal shooting 111.89 for third place but finishing fifth overall. Matt Smith took fourth with a time of 115.38 seconds finishing sixth overall and coming fifth in the Open Division was Bernie McHugh Jr. with a time of 125.35 seconds which put him in 13th overall.

Though he didn’t take the high overall spot, Jerry Miculek was able to pick up wins in the Limited Pistol and Open Rimfire matches. In the Limited Division he won four stages shooting the match in 102.73 seconds, good enough for third overall and to edge out second place shooter BJ Norris by 1.98 seconds. Norris won three stages shooting the match in 104.71 for the fourth overall spot. Third place went to Kay Clark-Miculek with a time of 119.96 (eighth overall). Finishing fourth and fifth in the division and ninth and tenth overall respectively were Johnny Brister with a time of 120.22 seconds and Bryant Chaffin with a time of 122.37 seconds.

In the Open Rimfire Pistol match, where times are significantly lower due to the “low ready” start position, Jerry Miculek took top honors by winning five stages and shooting a total time of 68.06 seconds. Again finishing second and winning three stages was BJ Norris with a time of 75.71 seconds. In a mirror image of the Limited match, Kay Clark-Miculek took another third place with a time of 81.42 seconds. Clay Autrey finished fourth in 114.88 seconds and Barbara Thibodaux claimed fifth in 117.47 seconds.

The Steel Shoot Series Louisiana Regional was held July 19-20 at the Shootout Range in Princeton, Louisiana. It is one of four regional championships in the sport of Speed Shooting which is governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA). The four match series is sponsored by noted firearms maker Smith and Wesson which has a long and distinguished record of supporting the shooting sports in America.

Remaining matches in the series include the Virginia Regional in Fredericksburg, Virginia the weekend of August 1-3 and the Northwest Regional hosted by the Albany Rifle & Pistol Club in Albany, Oregon the weekend of September 26-28.

Courses of fire, or stages, are made up of five steel targets which are electronically timed to one one-hundredth of a second. Competitors shoot each stage five times with their slowest run eliminated. The combined time of the best runs is their score for that stage and their combined score of all eight stages is their match score.

Championships were determined in the Open Rimfire Pistol, Revolver Iron, Single Stack Pistol, Production Pistol, Open Pistol and Limited Pistol divisions.
