I'm seeking a Massachusetts or N.E. region gunsmith who is a wizard at welding up holes in barrels and receivers from scope and sight mounts, so that they just disappear. I understand the barrel and receiver will have to be re-blued. Does anyone know such a craftsman?

Thanks,

M

problem with that idea is welding will create non-uniform localized heat-treatment of welded areas.
maybe OK for receivers but i don't think a good thing for barrels

There can't be too many legitimate reasons to do so. Usually, you just fill the holes with set screws. If there are people who do this be prepared for some major cost. Disappearing holes in metal would require an artist with technical skills.

I've seen it done, that is, I've seen the before and after of welding scope base screws in barrels, and yes, it requires a real craftsman, and is done with a TIG welder. There's very little heating, no heat distortion if done properly. Finding a guy who does it is the tough part.

If it was just a utility gun I wouldn't bother, but this is for a true collector's piece, and the aesthetics are important.

If it is a "true collector's piece" and you do this, you'd be perpetrating fraud. There is a vast difference between restoration and alteration.

You know, I can't just let that go - "perpetrating a fraud" - please, give me a break. What's with folks on this forum? I want to weld over some scope screw holes and I'm 'perpetrating a fraud?" WTF?

We used to use Mike Pigney in Taunton when in that area. He does top quality work and we recommend him highly. His number was 508-821-7621. He can also do any re-bluing or parkerizing you need. Good luck and post before and after pics if you can.

Thanks very much! I'll contact him. It's not a definite project yet, I'm considering a purchase of a rifle that would go for about $4k in unmolested condition; there's one available with various scope mount holes drilled in it. It's intended for use by me, my "last" rifle in that caliber, and I'd like it to be really nice.
