I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to shotguns so I'm looking to you guys for some answers. I'm looking for a 12ga shotgun reasonably priced to accomplish 2 things, recreationaly shoot trap/skeet with my father in law (nothing competitive), and turkey/goose hunt in the fall.

I'm looking for some suggestions on brand/models so i can keep an eye out on the consignment racks at the local gun shops....any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Cant go wrong with a remington 870 great AP shotgun. for the purposes you described get at least a 28inch (a 30 would be better) barrel with removable chokes.

I just got an 870 from a board member with the long barrel, various chokes, etc brand new in the box, so now not only do I have a nice skeet gun, but I bought an 18 inch barrel so it doubles as a home defense weapon

It's a versatile gun with a zillion configurations

Here's my two cents:

Save up a bit more, and get an auto loader!

When I started out, I had a Mossberg 500, and always hated FUMBLING with it when I was actively shooting.

So, skip right past the pump action, and get a used semi-auto loading shotgun. The Remington semi's are pretty damned reliable, easy to get parts for, and will last a lifetime if treated properly.

Just load it up, and pull the trigger every time you need another round in the chamber.

The difference in price between a pump action and a semi-auto loader isn't much, and well worth the additional cost.

USED from a gun show is the way to go.

mossberg has packages for the 500 that include two barrels w/chokes-- pretty reasonable prices.

Yup - Dicks Sporting Goods has 500 packages that include: 28" ribbed, ported field barrel, 3 chokes, 24" cantilever rifled, ported slug barrel, 2.5x shotgun scope and rings, 2 cheek risers and a tube sling mount. Price: About $350.00
It's hard to beat....

We have the same package in the 935 semi-auto for about $500.00. I have zero experience or customer feedback on Mossy semi-autos, but the feedback on the 500 pumps has been stellar. The only issues I've had setting them up were a scope or two that bottomed out trying to zero it with a laser boresighter. That was out of about 50 or so packages we sold in Pittsfield last season...The scopes are essentially "free" so you can;t expect much, but reports back were excellent overall...
