I have noticed some interest in this rifle on a few threads so I thought I would post a review of sorts. Right off, let me say that I really like the Sig 556, a lot. The A2 stock is just fine with me and the bare barrel end on the MA model is only mildly disconcerting at first. I like the balance and feel. It goes to the shoulder well and the trigger is very nice. I have put a few hundred rounds through it without incident and it is certainly more accurate then I am. Field stripping is easy and cleaning accessibility is excellent.
Now, here are some things that I notice that were not immediately apparent. The optics that come with the Holo version are not great. In bright sunlight they were too dim for these old eyes, I have already given them away. The flip up buis leave a lot to be desired. The rear sight flips down completely into the rail and is very difficult to pry up without some tool, it is adjustable for elevation only. The front sight is a very thick flat top blade that is adjustable for windage. Samson makes a decent front sight replacement and of course there are a host of rear sights that could be mounted on the rail. The charging handle slants upward and definitely interferes with some mounts or optics depending upon placement. Griffin Tactical makes a replacement charging handle that slants downward and out of the way. The Sig 556 does take standard AR mags so that means there is a reasonably good source for high caps in MA. I have already added an Ergo vertical fore grip.
My observation is that much like an AR one could use it as is, but to truly optimize this rifle requires some additional investment. The starting price is just over $1,300.00 and one could spend that much (or more) again tweaking it.
