SIG GRIP SCREW HEADS

What size is the SCREW HEAD for the Sig P229 grips...I'm putting in hogue grips.

The head....they use those screws with the star shape, I was wondering what size screw-driver i should use. I don't have that tool-head, so I need to go buy one. That's why I'm asking. i'll see if I can find a picture

I believe they are either the torx or the hex screws: I wanted to know if anyone knew what size driver I'd need.

A set of Torx bits is a worthy investment. Very frustrating when you don't have one.

Actually, it's a Torx-Plus bit. A regular Torx bit doesn't fit properly. The newer Sig P229's use this type for the grip screws.

The Hogue screws I have are NOT torx. I know this for a fact,
unless of course they changed them recently.

I've only ever seen two types- one is hex and the other is the standard Sig flat head.
(Edit: I guess I'm an idiot and they ARE using torx now on the really new guns... )

Another thing people should watch out for is the Hogue brand hex
screws are soft. DO NOT overtighten them! You -WILL- shear the
head off. Many reccommend sticking with the Sig -Slotted-
factory screws because of this reason. (they're tougher).

I guess they did change it... figures... you get used to something,
then they change it. Admittedly, one of the problems with the
flat heads is people rarely have a blade which is the right width and
end up peening the edges of the slot over a bit.

I would guess it's because of the peening/damage issue. Torx bits typically
force the owner to use the appropriate sized wrench. I have a total
of 1 screwdriver in my entire house that will actually fit the Sig
screws correctly. (eg, the blade fits in the slot without wobbling. )
The ones that aren't wide enough tend to ding up the slot and
actually damage the metal the screw is made out of. Hard to
explain, but if you've seen a used Sig, it will often have dinged up
screws on it if the owner ever changed the grip panels. Sometimes
these screws even get sharp edges around the slots as a result.
