Hello,
I recently purchased a lightly used Sig P226. I've been to the range with it twice and while it shoots like a freakin dream, both times the slide has failed to lock back after the last round was fired off. I've put 150 rounds (Winchester WB) through it and it continues to do this after the last round every time. None of my other guns do this. Was this designed like this or is there something wrong with it I should look into? Thanks!

A lot of people have this happen with Sigs because they don't realize that their thumb tends to hit the slide catch during recoil. Maybe try shooting the last round 1 handed, or with your thumb well away from the slide catch.

Also, if you are using old magazines, the spring and or follower might be worn out, causing this issue.

Thumb on slide lock? Try different mags?
Oh nice looking sig

Weak magazine spring, worn or damaged follower, worn or damaged slide catch, weak ammo, hand position, could be any of these things.

I'll certainly pay closer attention to my thumb on the slide release next time.

The gun is 2 years old, is it possible that the springs could be bad already???

Gun springs will most likely be fine then. But if you are using old or preban mags then the magazine parts might need replacement.

I just changed up my grip for better support and been having this same issue. The slide release on the P99 is pretty big and my thumb bumps it.

I was taught to shoot classic P series Sigs with my stronghand thumb resting slightly outside my weak hand thumb joint. I have large thumbs, and have always had issues with my thumb hindering lockback.

Traditional thumb forward grip on my 226 do not work for me.

A lot of the issues Sigs have with failure to lock back are shooter induced, but for those that aren't, look for burs on the slide stop intercept notch on the slide. Also, if the gun has a MIM slide stop, check for burs where it intercepts the slide. The MIM part has a parting line on it that can be filed out.

You can also tweak the slide stop spring and debur it too. I fixed a few of these every day at the factory using these methods when I was there. The slide stop spring can also be bent causing it to rub on the inside of the gun and that can cause interference too.

Very rarely is it the magazine causing the issue 100 percent. An older mag will make it happen more but the main issue is usually with the slide stop spring or burs on the slide stop or the slide itself.

if you can't work it out, let me know and I can square you away.

I'll definitely have to try shooting it a little differently as far as thumb position is concerned and see if that helps. I don't think it's a limp wrist issue, I've shot plenty to have corrected that issue.

I'll take you up on that if the problem persists. Thanks

+1 I have an old eagle mag with this problem and I have had my thumb on the slide catch if not careful. Probably not the gun.

My initial thoughts were that it can't be the gun. The mags are new mags that came with the gun so I think that issue is out. I didn't realize how easy it is to bump the slide stop with my thumb until it was mentioned here. I'll have to pay closer attention to that.

Many good siggestions in this thread.
a few more ideas....

Is slide moving freely? Have you cleaned it and very lighly re-lubed?
does slide lock back if pulled back manually on an empty mag?

usually if slide is dirty i will observe FT-feed and FT-slide hold open because slide resistance is high.

if u havent cleaned the gun them def start there.

Try something hotter than WWB. You may also be limp wristing.

WWB isn't that weak in 115 though, I really doubt it's the ammo. Sigs are also pretty difficult to limp wrist. On Sigs its usually something to do with riding the lever or the lever itself or follower isn't pushing the lever up hard enough.

The slide glides freely and very smooth. I've cleaned & lubed it 3 times already (when I brought it home the first time and after the 2 range visits). The slide does lock back on a empty mag when I pull it back.

ok yup then likely something w slidestop lever or mag follwer.
confirm no finger touching the slidestop. The sig slidestop is quite eady to disengage so any pressure whatsoever will probably prevent slide locking open.
if occurring w various mags then its gun and i would send it back to sig.

if your right handed put your right thumb over your left thumb or vice versa, assuming your use a thumbs foward grip.

Okay so I was able to get to the range tonight and paid special attention to the position of my thumb on my weak hand. That may have been the problem. I shot 100rds through it and the slide locked back each time. I must've been bumping the release somehow previously. I think the problem is solved here. Thanks again for all your help.

I just got my new P226 to the range, and guess what happened after the first couple of magazines... Yep. Altered my grip, and issue resolved.

I've also got a P227, which is wider, and had no such problems bumping the slide lock lever.

I've seen it on a few of my new 10 round mags.. The follower did not catch the slide catch lever.. Does it do it on both mags? And yes.. That's a damned pretty sig.
