I have a Savage Stevens model 94h. It is you average break open single shot shotgun. It has no manual safety and an exposed hammer.
Today I took it out for the first time in a while and while shooting twice it broke open when we shot it. It happened once when my friend was shooting it but we thought he just had his hand in the wrong place and hit the break open lever on recoil since it had never done that before. I shot it right after that and it did the same thing and I know that my hand was nowhere near the lever. We put it away after that because we were worried it was dangerous to continue shooting it.
Anyone know what could cause this issue and how to fix it? I'm reluctant to take this gun to a gunsmith because the repair will most likely cost me more than the gun did. If I can't get it working correctly I'll just sell it to someone with the knowledge and time to fix it, but I wondered if there was an easy fix first.

sounds like the top lever spring or latch is not grabbing the reciever well enough. You might get luck and just find that there is some crud in there. I put my money on a worn spring or the lug or part it self the locks the recieve closed.
