So I have been thinking about getting a 22 for something cheap and fun to shoot. I have it down to the Ruger 22/45 with 5 1/2 bull barrel or the S&W22a 5 1/2 bull barrel with real tree camo. I'm looking for feed back on the real tree is it durable? I have shot both models I just dont know which one I like better. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dennis

What to buy?

I like the Rugers & own a couple of them; a Mk2 competition (stainless slab-sided) & a new Mk3 22-45 model (polymer framed, blued, slab-sided barrel, fixed 3-dot sights). They come in many shapes/sizes. Stripped it, cleaned it & put 250 rds through it. Nice little plinker/backpacker pistol. I have tried the S&W's and have nothing against them, it's just that I prefer the Ruger. Shot the Mk1 in my younger days & taught my kids on the Mk2. By the way. . .the web connection to the Ruger you posted is that of the standard Mk3 model. The 22/45 is their polymer framed model with a frame/grip design resembling the .45 as well as a mag release button on the left side of the frame (differs from the Mk models).

I love the 22A. It's personal preference, both will serve you well. The MkIII 22/45 is a reliable gun, a classic. The 22A, on the other hand , is infinitely easier to strip for cleaning, and is also reliable. Smith stands behind their products 100%.

Both will feed almost anything you use.

I just sold my 22A 7" for a Ruger MKIII 7", only reason was the ability to upgrade the trigger group on the Ruger for bullseye. The accuracy and reliability is about equal, with the Ruger having a slight edge with the metal trigger. On the MKIII the mag release is moved to the left side frame.
I had a firing pin break at around 8000 rounds, one call to Smith and a replacement was sent right out.
I shoot the Ruger a little better, but will be replacing the 22A when funds permit.
The Ruger is a bit of a pain to clean, the Smith was a breeze.
If your looking for a more serious target gun, get the Ruger, a fun plinker Smith.

I can definitely vouch for the 22A. I have fed quite a few rounds in it since buying it not that long ago and I have no complaints that I can think of. It has been very reliable and like a previous poster mentioned it is a breeze to take apart and clean. For the short money you pay for the gun it more than makes up for it.
