The application process is under way, and Somerville hopes to hire a new police chief after a national search this summer.
“Our successful national police chief selection process in 2007 turned up several excellent candidates for the position, and I am optimistic that we will once again have our choice of top-notch candidates from across the country,” Mayor Joe Curtatone said in a press release.
A nine-member selection panel was appointed last month and will help compile a list of qualified candidates from a national applicant pool, said Jesse Baker, panel chairman and director of personnel for the city.
Executive recruiting firm Waters Consulting Group Inc. is conducting the search and currently collecting resumes. The requirements have been advertised this month and applications are coming in. Minimum requirements include 15 years of law enforcement experience; a master’s degree or a four-year college degree in criminal justice or related field; and experience in a multicultural, multilingual environment with a preference to those who have completed nationally recognized leadership training. The starting salary is in the mid- to high $100,000 range.
The panel hopes to first review the applications on May 5, select semifinalists by mid-May and have a list of finalists by June to visit and interview. Finalists will be presented to the community for a citywide interview. Curtatone expects to make a final recommendation to the aldermen this summer.
“It’s a working timeline,” Baker said. “Hopefully a decision will be made end of June.”
Curtatone will also seek input from key stakeholders throughout the community. “In order to ensure that the diversity of Somerville is represented in the police chief search, I have asked 20 individuals representing our city to meet with the selection panel and Waters Consulting and share their views on what we need,” he said.
The process will follow the national search conducted following the retirement of Police Chief Robert Bradley in 2007 in which Chief Anthony Holloway was hired. He was hired in August 2007 and drew a salary of $161,000. Holloway resigned his post in January to take the police chief position in his hometown Clearwater, Fla.
