Springfield TRP issue... pretty disappointing for a pricey gun

Took apart my TRP today to do a trigger job on it. Started off well, polished the barrel, trigger, disconnect and sear, as well as stoned the sear. Then I remove the paint from the hammer (just the hidden portion) in preparation for polishing the surfaces, then I noticed an issue. Not sure if the hammer is a MIM part (I would hope not for the price of the gun), but I noticed a big crack on one of the ears that houses hammer strut pin (last pic). Not happy, and I dont want to send the gun back to Springfield, so i will get a nicer one from Midway USA. Just venting... probably 300 rounds thru the gun between me and the previous owner. I apologize for the crappy pic (not zoomed in), but the crack is in the 10 O'clock position when looking at the last pic. The crack goes completely thru one ear.

I am thinking I may email them the issue with some higher res pics and see if they will send me a hammer? I'd hate to go thru the effort of sending it in, but might take that route. Other than that, it is a nice tight gun.

What seems to be the most disappointing is that the cracks were not visible until the paint came off... makes me think the part had the damage before being painted. Not something you would expect from a $1600 gun.

I'd make them go over the whole gun. It's a pita shipping, but I'd demand that the custom shop inspect every part on this pistol. This is a major issue, you might even demand that they do one of their overalls on it.

This.

Not a bad idea. The last thing a major manufacturer wants is QC issues on their higher priced models. Word of mouth gets around fast.

I will keep you guys updated. I'd rather replace the hammer with a non-MIM part rather than send it in. I'll be looking for an EGW or similar.

I'd be very disappointed just to learn that they used paint on a $1600 gun instead of something more durable or traditional such as bluing.

That sucks. Sorry man, but when you get it back.and want to sell it because of this disheartening situation, let me know!

:)

No worries Sam... i ordered a Nighthawk tool steel hammer that will get this thing back together this week. I did a trigger job on it while it has been sitting. The gun is till a nice piece, just disappointed that everything is MIM for the price, Plus it should have been caught before coating from SA.

I would replace both hammer and sear. If the hammer sucks, I would expect the same from the sear.

Well, I think i may have pieced back together the story of this hammer. What I suspect happened is that the hammer was damaged when the pin was being driven in. I drove the pin out in order to remove the hammer strut, and the hammer broke apart along the 3 cracks. Pics below. I replaced the hammer with a night hawk hammer.

Havent tried it with the new hammer. Even with the old hammer it still shot like a dream. Shoots like an expensive gun, no disappointments there!

One thing I like is the armorcoat on the TRP, the Nighthawk black isn't as nice

Took it to the range... Hammer/gun worked flawlessly. I improved the trigger too, and adjusted the sight (slightly). She is truly a tack driver. I was blasting small water bottles (small single serve Poland springs bottles) at 75 feet (25 yds).
