Stag arms model 8 piston question

I have a Stag Arms model 8 piston gun. On the front of the gas block there is an end cap/adjustment screw that retains the piston.

Tonight I pulled it apart to clean and lube before a competition tomorrow and I had difficulty removing the piston cap (I’m going to call it a piston cap because I don’t know the real name.. feel free to correct me). It was hard to remove and I had just had it apart 400 rounds ago and I may have 2500 rounds through this gun total.

When I got it out, the end closest to the piston head appeared to be peened over so as to slightly widen the end that is inserted in the piston tube so that it barely fit without using some ‘persuasive techniques’ to reassemble it.

Anyone know why this would happen?

Added info: I only shoot 55gr .223 ammo, typically Fiocchi. This is the first issue I have had with it. It is well maintained and I clean it more often than most shooters I know just because I like to.

Any and all info appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

John
