I know the "Stock" one on my Glock 19 didn't stick out far enough for me, only about 3/16" or so.
I installed an "extended" one and adjusted it to fit my needs.
Wear, as it relates to a Glock mag release usually occurs at the point where it engages the magazine body. It is possible to either wear out the catch groove in the mag body or the locking surface on the mag release itself. If your magazine will not remain locked in, one of those two is usually the issue.

The mag release doesn't stick out much at all. I have a stock release on my Glock 23 and an extended on my Glock 20 (larger grip makes the release a little harder to reach). If your finger can wear out the exterior portion of the release before the interior wears out, I'll take my hat off to you. Unless you're running it against sandpaper, I wouldn't worry about the exterior.
The interior on the other hand needs to be monitored for wear and wears more when a full magazine is ejected than when an empty magazine is released because it's under more stress when a full magazine is installed.
