Well I was thinking about getting a new .308 rifle. My choices were a m1a or a savage bolt. It would mainly be used for target shooting and some out of state hunting. After looking at .308 ammo prices and seeing I don't have any room in my gun cabinet, I have thrown that idea out. After doing some thinking I decided that my money would be better well spent on a nice gun safe which offers more storage for my guns and ammo. With the money left over from the safe purchase i would like to get a nice .22lr rifle. I have never owned a .22. I have been looking at a Henry lever action or savage bolt. I would use it mostly at the range but plan on doing some pest management/small game hunting. The Henry advertises that it can be feed with .22 short or .22lr. Would that hold true with the mag fed savage bolt also? I would like to be able to shoot a short or a quieter sub sonic .22 if needed.

thanks,
jim

Jim - I don't know anything about that rifle specifically, but there are plenty of subsonic choices out there in .22Lr. You don't need to go to .22 short for that.

So to that end, whether or not the Savage can feed something other than .22 LR isn't really a factor. If you want soft and quiet, use CCI standard velocity, which are subsonic and very accurate.

If you want hot. Get some CCI velocitor.

You'll also find that even the specialty ammo for .22 LR is much cheaper than .22 short, since they make so much more of it.
