Is there any reason I can't swap a 9mm barrel, slide, and magazine onto my .40 caliber frame, or vice versa? The parts all seem to fit perfectly, and I can't see any differences between the two caliber frames.

You would need a conversion barrel to go from .40 S+W to 9mm, because the breechface is the wrong size. Not sure if they make them for the M+P yet or not.

He's taking about swapping the barrel AND slide along with the magazine.

In that case, I don't see how it could not work between the 9mm, .40, and .357 pistols which all share the same frame size.

For the opposite reason, such a swap won't work when the .45 M&Ps are involved.

The ejector may be different on the 40/357 vs the 9mm....

Not sure if that is an easy swap or not....

Yeah, that'd probably work, but it'd also be stupidly expensive. IMHO it's a dumb idea unless you're getting a really good deal on the parts. I'd bet that a complete M+P upper is going to be upwards of $200, and you're halfway into another gun. I'm not into caliber conversions, I'd rather have the other gun. [laugh] (Then again I'm guilty of looking for any excuse I can to buy another gun, you caught me red handed on that. )

Found some conversion barrels here check them out, I am not sure what else you need, I think someone else can help you with the hole process.

Smith & Wesson M&P
Machined from certified 416R stainless steel for superior strength, durability, and accuracy. Barrels are match grade, hardened to 40-42 HRC and cut broach rifled to shoot jacketed or lead bullets. All barrels are chambered for full case support. All Smith & Wesson M&P barrels are drop in and will only occasionally require modification to fit. Extended lengths are available, as well as ported and threaded options. Two port options are extended barrels with ports beyond the end of the slide. Check with the manufacturer of your attachment to verify thread option before ordering. For threaded applications select finished overall length 0.70" longer than standard length. 40S&W-to-9mm conversion barrels require the use of a 9mm magazine.

Not only should it work, it does. I use the slide from my M&P9 on my M&P40 when practicing for USPSA and during matches as well, allowing me to take advantage of most of the improvements I had done to the M&P40 by Burwell. I've also fitted my .357 barrel to the M&P40 slide with no issues.

Good to know, thanks! That confirms what I'd suspected based on schematic part numbers and measuring and stuff.

I've got two of them, and one has a very nice trigger, the other... um... doesn't. I just wanted to shoot the 9mm with the .40's trigger until I properly fix the crap-tastic MA compliant one.
