A Brit who volunteered in Ukraine said that among the other volunteers were some very tough guys who simply could not take artillery shelling and quit. They wanted to have face-to-face combat and kill. This long-range faceless death was just too much for them.
WW1 shelling produced "shell-shock" victims and modern trench warfare in Ukraine is doing the same.
