I"m a contractor, and while working in a customers attic today doing some work for their new kitchen I saw these two guns in the attic. I asked the homeowner about them and he said they were his wife's grandfathers and have been sitting up there for about 30 years. He said his wife has been looking to get rid of them, so I told him I might be intersted in buying them. One is a Winchester 1897 ser.#556xxx. The other is a Savage Arms fox model b 12 gauge. They both are a little rough in the stocks and have bluing missing. Otherwise mechanical they seemed fine and there wasn't any apparent rust. I"ve only had my Ltc-a for 10 months and so far only have handguns. I would like to start adding some shotguns like to this to my new 24 gun safe, and am curious what you guys think. Are they worth buying, how much would be a fair price to offer, how would I get them transfered, etc. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
Mike

Those both would be a nice score look around on gun broker to get fair idea what they are worth. Just bring them to a FFL there will be no problem with trail of ownership.

Take some $$$ of the bill if your working for them.
Honestly you are doing them a favor by removing the risk of a felony charge for unlicensed and improper storage.

I wonder if there are any potential complications regarding trail of ownership? I'm guessing no FA-10 was ever filed to transfer these.

There is no such BS, not even in MA. What the previous owners did or didn't do is not your problem. In this case he could bring them and the gun to any FFL that doesn't suck and do the transfer.

Any recomendations on a FFL in the Springfield area that doesn't suck? And after comparing them to similar guns online I'm thinking $400 or so for both of them. I have no problem paying a fair price for them, but they don't seem to be going for too much unless they"re in perfect conditon.

I think they're worth more than $400 combined. Remsport in Ludlow might be willing to do the transfer but I understand he's had some personal issues and was closed for a week or so.

I will check with John this week to see if he can do the transfer. He has an Ar in the classifieds that i'm interested in so maybe I can kill two birds with one stone.

I never even thought about the winchester for CAS. I would like to get into cas one day, and after I buy this 97 i'll be one gun closer to what I need.

Take the owner and guns to FFL and transfer. Done and done.
