three police officers shot in PA

Are guns the problem, or is it the sinking economy? Or is it the increased isolation of our elected officials from their constituents? Or is it the systematic march toward Socialism and the loss of freedom that comes with it? Or is it a biased media that no longer accurately reports the news but now creates it? Could it be a combination of all of the above?

Psychologists have already predicted that violence would increase as the economy worsens. Feelings of helplessness, isolation, job loss, home foreclosures and increasing government control over citizen's lives and livelihoods.

I think that it's going to get worse. But one thing I refuse to do is to do nothing when the same idiots in Washington who created this mess, and the media that supports them, tries to blame this surge in violence on guns.

Guns didn't create this mess we're in, politicians and the media did! I blame this surge in violence on them!

U.S. recession fuels crime rise, police chiefs say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police chiefs in the United States say the economic downturn is fueling a rise in crime and warn that cuts to their budgets could handcuff their efforts to tackle it, according to a report on Tuesday.

Of 233 police agencies surveyed by the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington-based law enforcement organization, 44 percent reported a rise in certain types of crime they attributed to the United States' worst economic and financial crisis in decades.

The survey, conducted in late December and early January, also found that 63 percent of the departments were making plans for overall cuts in their funding for the next fiscal year. "We are not saying there is going to be a crime wave, but we are saying this is a wake-up call and we anticipate the situation will continue to deteriorate," PERF executive director Chuck Wexler told Reuters in an interview.

There has long been debate over the connection between crime and the economy, but criminologists, sociologists and police chiefs interviewed by Reuters in October predicted a rise in crimes as the United States sinks deeper into recession. Crime has increased during every recession since the late 1950s, sociologists said............."

I'm sorry for the family's of the officers. While I don't always agree with the police, nobody deserves to be gunned down like a rabid dog. God speed guys!!

New York Daily News Headline..

Three Pittsburgh police officers killed by gun-loving maniac; afraid Obama would limit gun rights.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the officers families.
Another senseless tragedy.
From the press conference just heard on cable, the shooters mother was in the house and they were engaged in a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, two responding officers were fatally shot as they approached the doorway of the house. An officer done with his shift and on his way home, responded to the call and was fatally shot also. A fourth officer was wounded on his hand and another broke his leg in a fall.

I am dead serious. If we gun owners can not police our own ranks, you can bet for sure that obama is going to do it for us. I see no proposals from anyone (NRA, etc) for solving the problem, except from eric holder types. What is the solution?

Buying a couple more cases of 5.56 is not the answer if they take everything you have that fires it. Wake up.

It's not our job to police each other. I can't keep you from going nuts & stabbing 54 people with a fork. I can only guarantee that if you come to my home or office & threaten me & my loved ones, you're going to be forcibly stopped.

Solution: Punish criminals, leave me alone.

Very well said indeed. It's not just us "gun nuts" that snap. How many times have we all heard of a police officer or someone "respectable" goes on a killing spree or just snap and shoot the wife or kids? We all need to "police" our selves.

My thoughts are with the families of the fallen police officers. The shooter will undoubtedly receive death penalty for this.

I am afraid that we as gun owners are going to feel the effects of the most recent shootings. The gun grabbers will have a field day with this.

It's not our job to police strangers, but we do need to be mindful of those close to us, friends and family, and help them work through their problems. Seems like both of the recent perps had been showing plenty of warning signs to their friends and families, yet no one did anything.

WoW......such masters of the obvious!!

People knew this was going to happen, its the natural order of things and its going to get much worse if a heavy handed government steps in and tries to crush the rights of the law abiding.

crimes

you all should be down here, the crims and lillings have been going on befor I moved here.the gun has been a tool but knifes are used plenty.and Mass killings are what??? 900 a yr.it is a cultureal thing in some places.whith out the media you would never know of it and in the past mass murder was never a big thing, until the media changed to socialism.
I believe these things may have a good efect for gun owners as the polititions may think twice about stirring up the pot.the rest of the country is not as timid as new england.and any politition here wants nothing to do with gun control.as they know its death to their career.

Its called law enforcement; there are already laws against killing. There IS no solution to random killings, it can happen with other instruments as well as a gun. That is the bottom line of this. People can try all they want but it will never be a perfect world where no one kills anyone else. Its not about the instrument, its about the person and their mentality. The liberals don't care about real solutions. You need to wake up.

"...One friend, Edward Perkovic, said the gunman feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon." Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said he feared that President Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."..."

The shooter had a MySpace page but it has since been shut down. He may have also been a member of a white supremacist website called Stormfront, though he only posted there once in a tattoo forum.

However, his friend Ed Perkovick, who was quoted in the news article also has a MySpace page and he also has some F'd up views.

From his MySpace page:

".....DOCUMENTS I RECCOMEND [sic]YOU READ BY GOOGLE: "Civil War II" by Tom Chittum "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" "The Turner Diaries" by Dr. William Pierce "Jewish Supremacy" by Dr. David Duke It Has Even Been Documented In The Communist Manifesto: "“We must realize that our party’s most powerful weapon is racial tension. "By propounding into the consciousness of the dark races that for centuries they have been oppressed by the whites, we can mold them to the program of the Communist Party. "In America we will aim for subtle victory. While inflaming the Negro minority against the whites, we will endeavour to instill in the whites a guilt complex for their exploitation of the Negros. "We will aid the Negros to rise to prominence in every walk of life, in the professions, and in the world of sports and entertainment. With this prestige, the Negro will be able to intermarry with the whites, and begin a process which will deliver America to our cause.” Statement by Israel Cohen, in his book, “A Racial Programme for the Twentieth Century,” 1912, which is also in the Congressional Record, Vol. 103, p. 8559, June 7th, 1957"

Oh and Ed's music sucks. http://www.myspace.com/edfromalate

I'm getting pretty sick over this bullshit. People use police as whipping boys for their frustrations rather then accept responsibility for the world around them, which we all shape. These officers were heroes killed by a cowardly moron who harbored resentment for a situation he couldn't control. Obama isn't going to get firearms banned again. Idiots like him are. Unbelieveable... Another funeral to go to...

This is crap all the way around.

The tinfoil hatter in me is starting to see false flags abounding. The reality of it is that we're looking at a self fulfilling prophecy in the making.

Here's how bad things could suck, real fast... it only takes enough of these incidents to make some douchebag politicians feel like the political tides are in their favor enough to pass some insane legislation... even if in just one strongly anti gun state a legislative body passes some retroactive banning or confiscation act, there are people that will shoot before handing over their guns. then the media will jump on it, and we will see more places passing more laws, and more shooting will take place.

it doesn't take long for this kind of powderkeg to explode. write your legislators now folks, even if they are the most dispicable anti gun douche's you've ever seen. advise them that NO action taken by ONE or even a series of individuals is reason enough to trample the rights of all citizens.

FiXXXer024, It's not just a one way street. Whether you agree or not it works both ways. Government is also using police as their strongarm to force their will against the rights of citizens in many cases. The rise in violence is fueled from both directions, not just from the people towards government or police, but from government USING police against people.

To deny that it happens everyday in this country would be ludicrous.

I do not condone what happened, but I understand how and why it can and does happen and will likely happen more often if government continues to threaten the citizens of this country with revocation of their rights.

When it comes down to it, the guy on the beat is going to have to look inside himself and decide whether he is going to obey his oath of office and protect the rights of the citizen or obey those who sign his paycheck.

What many in authoratative positions in law enforcement don't understand is, that the people who are legally armed are their best allies......in most any situation. The fact that some(extremely few) snap a mainspring on occasion is not reason enough to threaten the rest with denial of their rights. People will not stand for it.
Hundreds of thousands of men and women have fought and died or been injured protecting the rights and lives of others all around the world. Those same people will be damned if they are going to sit back and watch their own rights and freedoms in their own country be jerked out from under their feet by their own corrupt, power drunk, elected officials, using their hired police forces to do their bidding.

Most people, myself included are not anti government......we are anti CORRUPT government. When government treats its electorate like shit, they can and should expect reprocussions, its only natural. When people are treated fairly and feel that they have an avenue for a redress of greivances they will act accordingly. When they feel oppressed, they can and will resist, its as natural as the cycles of day and night.

This is a horrible tragedy that's the result of a very angry and unbalanced individual. Anyone who is angry, frustrated, discouraged or heartless enough to plan any sort of attack on LEOs or law abiding citizens is going to find a way to carry out that attack with some form of weapon - firearm or otherwise. Just remember the 9/11 attacks.

I'm so sorry for the families, friends and community of these officers.

This is pretty scary stuff. Apparently he was a happy go lucky guy, who just woke up and snapped today. If the article is true, no real indication ahead of time he was going to popl

Not true! He was a scary, violent man BEFORE he shot anyone. From the Yahoo version of the story-

Poplawski had often fought with neighbors and had even gotten into fist fights with a couple, Sand said.

"This is a relatively really quiet neighborhood except for him," Sand said. "He was just one of those kids that we knew to stay clear from."

Harper confirmed police had responded to calls from the Poplawski house several times but said the incidents were still being investigated.

The unnecessary loss of any life is tragic, however maybe some good can come out of this incident after the fact. Unlike Virgina Tech, Columbine or the other recent shootings this year this guy is still alive. There will of course be some type of trial so maybe we can learn something about the motivations and state of mind of this individual. There are some questions that the article doesn't answer and that I hope we do find out...

Why where the police there in the first place?
Was he shot first and was he firing is self defense?
Why did he shoot the officers?
If the officers shot first, why did they shoot?

From the article it does sound like he was panicked and thought he was going to die. It also sound like he was fired upon first based on this article quote.

Perkovic, a 22-year-old who said he was Poplawski's best friend, said he got a call at work from him in which he said, "Eddie, I am going to die today. ... Tell your family I love them and I love you."

Perkovic said: "I heard gunshots and he hung up. ... He sounded like he was in pain, like he got shot."

evidently everything my father told me about south carolina is true. do they really spend the first 5 years of grammar school in theraputic exercises reconditioning your knuckles to hold a pencil because of all the early years spent dragging them on the ground?

Takes one to know one, seriously though, check your own spelling. Enough of this bashing on writing proficiency.

Do you read before you post? He wasn't making any sort of commentary on his writing, he was making fun of the fact that people in SC learn to fight before they learn to read.

My prayers will be going out to the families of the officers in this incident as well as the families of the victims from the Binghamton shootings as well.

As a country, we really need to take a close look at the societal issues that lead to these sorts of tragedies... I very much hope that one day people will realize that politicians aren't interested in fixing problems, they just want to slap band-aids on them to make themselves look good for re-election.

HU? What particular problem are we to solve? What solution are you proposing that the 1,000s of laws on the book regulating us now do not solve? At this point, if you are suggesting an all out ban and confiscation or turn in period... It is a powder keg out there...one spark will set it off: If you think today was the last of it, given the numbers of unemployed, you are crazy. [thinking]

WHAT! Maybe I just fell asleep on this board, or did we not just see what happens when a person makes an unsubstantiated allegation about someone's character and that basically makes them unsuitable for the rest of their life.

I am sorry, but I mind my own f*cking business, cover my own a$$, kiss my wife and daughter every night, and protect my family from all harm. Does this mean I am a paranoid nut to fear for my families protection?

Sorry, but turning the gun population into a bunch of sniveling snitches will only fuel the fire of bans and confiscations. Thanks but no: I take take care of my own business and leave others alone. I suggest you do the same. [thinking]
