Interview with Jeff Gonzales
Director of Training

U.S. Navy SEAL and modern warfare professional Jeff Gonzales serves as the director of training for Trident Concepts LLC. Gonzales was a decorated SEAL who served as an operator and trainer and participated in combat operations throughout the world. He is a published author and frequent presenter at industry trade shows/events.

Q: What kind of training does Trident Concepts provide to U.S. and allied militaries?
A: Trident Concepts provides advanced weapons and tactics training designed to not only meet the current threats head on, but defeat them. Our training is based on what we call reverse engineering, which is to say we work backwards from the conflict so that training more accurately reflects reality and increases the ratio of effective fire. We teach the proper tactical employment of the primary weapon system through the development of an offensive mindset, combat marksmanship skills and sound gun handling techniques. We maintain the same high-intensity mindset from NSW in our programs and deliver them in progressive and fast paced formats. We avoid getting complacent by continuing to evolve and adapt to the worlds emerging threats in order to provide cutting edge tactics, techniques and procedures. Ultimately, we will not rest until we know we can provide a better product to our armed forces.

Q: Why is this training necessary for military units? Don’t troops receive weapons and tactics training already?
A: We believe it is necessary for several reasons. With the current operations tempo, it is difficult to expect quality training to reach every armed forces service member. We believe every trooper deserves and should receive the very best training available. Over the years, there has also been some degradation in what we consider active and offensive warfighting skills with our primary infantry weapon systems. We have changed our mindset from a defensive posture to a more mobile and aggressive posture. Training on a static square range versus a two-dimensional plastic target is good at skill building, but is only a part of the solution. We need more realistic training that will better prepare the troops for the three-dimensional mobile targets they are more likely to engage in an asymmetrical battlefield. We need to unlearn some of what we have held true for so long.

Q: How does Tri-Con’s staff give it an edge over competitors in the marketplace?
A: We believe our edge comes from a simple fact that every member of our staff recognizes the lives of our clients depends on their instructional ability, their operational experience and our core doctrine. The philosophies we adhered to while on active duty continue to guide us in all we do. We will continue to set an example they can follow, by leading from the front. Everything we ask of them we do so confidently because we have done it and we continue to do it. It is a privilege to stand in front of our nation’s bravest warriors and we earn that privilege every day with hard work and dedication towards bettering them.

Q: Has the global war on terrorism increased the demand for Tri-Con’s training?
A: Absolutely, and we are ever more resolved to make our programs available to all those we can reach. This is an important war and one that requires good people to seek out and destroy those who would wish to destroy our way of life. Training is never complete, it may plateau from time to time, but we must continue to train hard. We ourselves are constantly training; we are evolving along with the emerging threats. The results from this mentality are progressive training principles that work. They work because they are simple, clean and direct, that is what survives contact with the enemy.

Q: What new technologies is the company exploring to provide trainees the most real and relevant training?
A: We believe strongly that the mastery of the fundamentals is absolutely critical. New bells and whistles are encouraging, but they don’t replace these fundamentals. Now, with that being said, there are some training methodologies we believe are new and valuable. There are always different and refined techniques that come about. We make it our priority to continue to explore and evaluate these new techniques so that the training we provide is not only current, but also the effective. Our ultimate goal is to reach what we call auto-learning, which is where the individual understands the skills and concepts to the point they can continue to enhance their own performance.
