I was bought a Vega 12 gauge shotgun today from Fourseasons. I want to try trap and skeet shooting and it seemed like the absolute cheapest way to get into shotgun shooting. The gun is pretty tight and rough in the fit and finish. Should I use some dykem blue and a stone or file to smooth out the action or will it open up on its own?

I'll post some photos later, for $280 I am pretty darn impressed.

I wouldn't put a stone or file to a brand new gun without firing it first. It will likely loosen up a bit in the first 100 rounds. Clean it well of any packaging grease and lube as it says in your owners manual.

It should loosen up, just keep it lubed and greased (grease on the pivot points oil on the firing parts is how I keep my O/U shotguns).

Take it out and pattern it, to see where it shoots relative to Point of Aim vs Point of impact. Good luck with it and have some fun.

Thanks, I cleaned and lubed it this evening and the action is already a lot smoother. Can't wait to sight it in and try to hit some clay.

Hey Chris-

Let us know how it goes. I just picked one up myself this week, same "tight" condition. When I get a chance to shoot it, I'll report back here as well.

SJAN was spot on, I shot 20 slugs to sight in (which had wicked recoil) and shot 2 rounds of trap at MRA (50 shells) and the action is MUCH MUCH smoother. That being said, I can see there is one area of excessive wear on the engine turning which means there is a high spot somewhere. I am going to shoot another 3-4 rounds of trap before I consider messing with it. Did you buy the 12 or the 20? Where do you shoot?

Just moved back to the area, going to try to get in over at Reading Rifle & Revolver, apparently there's a wait list.

Got me the 12, pretty nice considering the price. Might go back and get another for the wife.
