I am 39 kinda out of shape but always wanted to be a cop. I just got invited to take the pt test for umass police. Anyone have experience with them or can give advice? Idk if I want to do it at my age anymore or if it's worth it on today's world.

Do it. I was 29 when I went to the DOC academy and 45 when I went to the police academy. It's no big deal. Start running and doing sit ups and push ups. Pull ups are good too. And don't forget to stretch.
You'll want to be in shape for a number of obvious reasons. Not the least of which is because all the gear and equipment is uncomfortable if you have a gut.

I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to get into LE.... but I also won't crap on your dream. You can do it. Start running and crushing sit ups/ push ups.

This for zoomass Amherst or Boston. Just how motivated are you at 39 is the question. Academy is doable like other said. Get hopping now. Don't be the slug of the class.

I remember when they shot smoke or tear gas canisters into people's apartments and then they tried to clear out a huge gathering from both sides at the same time (blarney). You'd probably start hoping new england sports teams never make the playoffs too

You couldn't pay me to deal with UMass students on a weekend night. Especially if you had to be one of the guys riding on the buses

If you like dealing with drunk young adults who will have little real world experience, its probably not a bad job. Overall there are much worse places to be a cop im sure though

Be prepared to take orders from someone a lot younger than you and get the new Jack treatment from dorks that have a few months on you plus a shitty schedule. Aside from the exercise you need to start eating healthy if your not, as you get older diet is almost more important than working out, that makes a huge difference.

If you can pass the PT test at age 39........then your good to go !
You can still work 20 years to get a pension, and not be an old man in the nursing home.

I had a buddy that worked for UMASS in Worcester. He didn’t have to go to the academy through them as he already had his certificate. It’s not a great job mainly because of all the college brats you have to eat shit from.

Having gone through a police academy, it’s not ideal to be out of shape going in. As long as you can pass the PT test, you should be ok, but it’s gonna be 6 months of hell for a job where you will get fired from if you act as trained. I would t do it in this day and age.

I would try state police or if a Boston resident try for bpd. At least there’s a faster turnaround for not being a new guy. You can work up the ladder a lot faster.

Definitely start dieting. PT, I would start with running, push ups, sit ups, burpees and planking. Do not half ass it, people think that the academy will train you. if, they see you out of shape or out of cadence then they will hammer you for it.

Having worked for a small town as well as BC PD (aux with no police powers at BC, working the dorms and football games), I'll say that there is a world of difference between the two jobs. At a college, your real job is to protect the kids from their own and other's stupid acts, not to enforce "law". A good example was the night a drunk and very belligerent kid came into the dorm with his buddy and assaulted two of our aux. officers. I called for backup and a burly Sgt. (FT with arrest powers) responded. The kid assaulted the Sgt. The Sgt. convinced the kid's buddy to take him off the campus to avoid arrest. On the street, the kid would have been arrested after getting "restrained" with force.

Personally, I enjoyed working with the students. I found most of them pretty decent to work with.

In today's environment, I would not want to wear a uniform! You might as well have a bullseye on your back.

Staties have a cutoff age of 34

OP don’t take this personally, I can only go off of what you wrote, but I’ve said it many times before, anybody that wants to be a cop in this day and age, to me, should be an immediate red flag.

The fact that you don’t know if it’s worth it in today’s environment, tells me you have poor situational awareness, at 39 you should be well aware.

No. It’s not worth it. You’re literally volunteering to babysit several thousand entitled, brainwashed, special, spoiled, immature commie loving children who hate you already and no amount of anything you think you’ll do fairly will ever change that in their minds.

You’ll be ‘led’ lol and judged, not by your Sgt or Lt (they’ll throw you under the bus as soon as the school staff tells them to) but by a bunch of old hippie professional students (college staff) who also hate you and will do anything in their powers to protect these newly minted angry little anti-American commies, Antifa types and BLM racists that they’ve raised to hate authority, to hate white people, and to hate anything or anybody in uniform, for the progressive/socialist agenda. Don’t walk, run, far and fast, into another career choice somewhere. You can thank me later.

Get into healthcare. There’s so many boomers out there that need their ass wiped it’s not even funny.

If this is your dream, then go for it.You don't want to look back years from now,and say I could been a cop.

If you want to do it, do it. We've had plenty of guys go through our academy that were over 40. I don't know about now, but when I went through the academy (when dinosaurs ruled) we had to run a mile and a half in under 9 minutes. Becoming a cop in this day and age is a tough proposition but at UMass you'd probably be insulated from a lot of the madness.

If you want to do it, then go ahead and give it a shot. Not sure I would do it again or not, but if you don't try, you will never know and always second guess your choice. Been through four academy's over the years last one at age 38 at the old Agawam Academy. It can be a rewarding career if you make it that way. Yes you'll have jackwad supervisors but if your not ready to take crappy job assignments, terrible hours and working most of your holidays, then find another profession. You don't normally do it because it's a great rewarding job where people pat you on the shoulder and thank you. We do it for other reasons. But I just put in my papers after 31 years.

So, what happened? Don't leave everyone hanging in suspense. You rocking a uniform?
