Yesterday I was visiting a local shop and an S&W 908 caught my eye. I was not looking for anything and was certainly not planning on spending any money. However, I made the mistake of asking to handle it, liked the way it felt and well, you all know what happened next. I am now the proud owner of a 908.

When I got it home I field stripped it and found the dirtiest gun I have ever purchased. Ever! The magazines were virtually clogged . The feed ramp was completely black. Every single component was just caked with black crap. It took me almost 2 hours to clean it. It does not look like it was shot much, just never cleaned. It looked almost new when I was done.

Today I took it to the range to see what it could do. I bagged up all the odd lot 9mm ammo that I had on hand to really test it out. I set up a few 5.5” Shoot N C’s at about 35’ and went to work. Accuracy was decent, not a tack driver, but more then adequate for a self defense handgun. The double action pull was surprisingly smooth and of course the single action pull was light and crisp It was truly a pleasure to shoot. In an effort to really test it out I just kept loading up the mags and firing them as fast as I could. Here is what I put through it:
• 130 rds. UMC 115 gr, (FMJ)
• 100 rds. WWB “ “
• 50 rds, old lead reloads (RN)
• 50 rds. Wolf steel case (FMJ)
• 50 rds. Blazer (FMJ)
• 20 rds. Federal Hydra Shoks (HP)
• 16 rds. Double Tap 124 gr. +P’s (HP)
• 50 rds. Double Tap 115 gr. +P’s (HP)
• 50 rds. Double Tap 142 gr. +P’s (HP)

The 908 functioned absolutely flawlessly. It got pretty hot, but never skipped a beat. What a work horse. When I consider all of the semi autos that I have to baby with type of ammo or number of rounds fired before cleaning or limp wristing or whatever, I have to feel like I just stumbled onto a real gem. What a concept: put ammo in, squeeze trigger, gun goes bang. Wow!

The 908 was on my list of candidates along with all of the other single stack 9mm Smiths when I was looking for a carry gun about a year ago. I ended up with a 3913, but would have been just as happy with any of them.

They are just as you say, reliable carry guns. I now have my choice of a 3913 or a 6906, which is an other reliable Smith 9mm.

With the cost of ammo, 9mm are relatively cheap to shoot.

I think others have figured all of this out, because I see fewer Smith 9mm guns at dealers all the time.

The only gun I have ever regretted selling was 6946. It was reliable, wickedly accurate and had the best DAO trigger that I have ever found. Also I only paid $200 used because S&W autos seemed out of favor at the time.
