I was looking at some Vega O/U shotguns recently and they feel pretty well made, and the price was right (sub $500 if I remember correctly)

They're made in Istanbul Turkey and imported by some company in Woburn.

But... that's all I can find on them.

More often than not, you get what you pay for.

I have yet to see a sub $500 O/U that I would consider well made.

I've owned a Mossberg Silver Reserve that was in that price range, it's an O.K. gun. If all you've got to spend is $500 and you have to have an O/U, then check that one out. Savage also makes O/U's in that price category although I have no experience with them.

$500 will buy you a very nice pump gun (Browning BPS), or even a nice pre-owned semi (Remington 1100) if you are willing to consider other options.

What he said.

You are better off with a Remington 1100 or 11-87 at that price point.

So.. I'm new to shotguns, I've had a POS ("Pride Of Spain", seriously) side by side 20 Ga. for a while that was kind of nasty, but only because it fit me horribly. Completely reliable though. I currently have a Mossberg 5500 MK II (Gas version of the 500) which I had to fix with a welder, but other than that has been a fine gun. I bought it used for $200, so I can't complain; I have no idea how it was (ab)used and for how long before I got it.

What makes a Silver Reserve only an "OK gun"? What do you get for an additional $500 besides pretty wood and engraving?

I'm not sure upping the budget by $500 will get you that much more of an O/U. Unless you shop hard and find yourself a really nice used Citori in the $1000 range.

But if you are willing to step up into the $2300 and up category you will buy an O/U that should serve you well for a lifetime. [wink]

Comparing my Browning XS Skeet to the Mossberg Silver Reserve is like comparing a Timex to a Rolex.

Both can be dependable, and well made relative to their price, but the Browning is far superior in fit, finish, and quality.

My experience with the SR was that for the extra 200$ you also got an armorers course (self taught). I had to replace firing pins (every 400 shots same problems on 4 other guns I know of as well). For short $ my vote is a Stoeger if it has to be an O/U. Lanber if you have a little more.

Better off with a B-gun if you really need a life time shot gun. CDNN usually has new stuff for 1200-1500 (field versions).

If you budget is limited then as others have said look for a used 1100 - 11-87 When cleaned and maintained the older ones seem to run well.

I got one for Trap and Sporting clays because I did not want to invest a lot of money in case I do not keep up with the sport.

If you are going to get serious about the sport, I recommend a higher-grade shotgun. Four months later, I spent the money and got a Benelli Super Sport auto. I love that gun, I still have the Vega as a backup, but I don’t regret spending the money on a gun [Benelli] that is going to last me a long time.

And yes, I am very much involed in the game of Trap and Sporting Clays. that was over a year ago... :)

Had the same thing happen with the Vega, one of my firing pins broken on the Vega; it was replaced under the warranty. Spend the extra, it is worth it…

I cannot speak for the opinions of the other responders but I have personally purchased 2 12 Guage O/U Vega Diamond Premium guns and I have found them to be excellent. I have allowed other shooters of very expensive guns also shoot them and give them a try.

At least at this point they have all been shocked at the qualitynof the guns and the price I paid. While they may not be on the par of a Berretta or a Browning they certainly perform to a very high standard.

I have not seen them advertised but discovered them by accident at the INTERSTATE Armory in Miami, Florida. I have used them quite a lot and I and everyone else who has fired them have been very satisfied with their performance and quality.

Yes they are current a sub $500 Dollar gun but they are increasing in price as they gain recognition in the USA market.

The Turks have been producing quality low cost guns for centuries and that is something that should be considered.

If you are not a Professional competition shooter you will most likely be very pleased. They come with five changeable chokes and shoot 2 3/4 or 3" rounds and come in 12 gauge and I know 20 gauge as well.

Then wood work is good qualitynand the scroll work just adds to their appearance and I can give them a positive recommendation.

You can look for them at www.interstatearmory.com and if not on the website you can call them at 305-285-1006 although they only have a few models left.

Hope this is helpful and I am speaking as a satisfied owner.

Look into a Lanber. It's made in Spain and goes for aound $6-700. I have one for over a year now. I put about 1k through it shooting trap and also makes a nice field gun.
