Anyone own and use a Walther P99 AS for any of the action shooting sports? It's on my short list and I wanted to hear specifically from someone that uses it in competition? Mag release? Trigger? Speed? Thanks for your opinions.

Once you become familiar with the Walther P99/S&W99 unique ambidextrous mag release they are excellent shooters. I use one in IDPA and stell plate shoots. They are very accurate and reliable and I have grown to truly apprecdiate their ambidextrous mag release. The trigger is far better than the Glock's as is their ergonomics.

My only question:

Since your spending this amount of money on a p99, why not just upgrade to a PPQ? Its got the quick defense trigger , and added trigger bar safety?

I had one and liked it, but all of my other pistols have a more "standard" mag release and I found it hard to go back and forth. The trigger was OK, a bit mushy (striker fired) but it had a nice reset.

I have the same problem but prefer the Walther mag release. I actually just traded my SR9c for a PPS because of it.

There's nothing really wrong with the P99 for IDPA/USPSA, but you don't see many of them. I don't know if there's any aftermarket support as far as replacement sights, trigger components, etc. Most people prefer the glock/m&p/etc style guns over the DA/SA stuff and it shows in what's out there for gear.

This is a good point. I personally don't really like Glocks but there's no denying that they have one of the widest selections of aftermarket goodies, do-dads, and farkles of all guns. (Except maybe the 1911.) With the Walther you're pretty much stuck with whatever the factory gives you.
