I think you'd be better served by flipping the wood chunk over, use an appropriate 'spade bit' to fit a T-nut so you can machine screw (1/4" hex bolt) into it from the top.That way, you're using the actual structure of the wood and compressing it vs. pulling on the wood screw. Or just use a hex bolt on the bottom and the washers/nuts on top.
