What Glock would be best for me?

I'm new to semi-auto handguns, and I'm interested in looking into getting a Glock. But I have some criteria. Maybe if you're experienced with Glocks you could narrow my search down to a particular model and particular generation that would fit my needs:

  • I tried a Glock 17 1st Gen that was really uncomfortable because the grip was too blocky and seemed large to me (maybe a later generation with better ergos?)
  • I would like a model that I would easily (cheaply?) be able to get a higher cap magazines for
  • I'd like a something as small as (or smaller) the M&P Compact size frame for better concealment
  • I'd prefer 9mm as I've already got a .40 M&P compact
  • I'd rather not have a manual safety switch
thanks in advance for your help

Well first off you pretty much are looking at a 19 or a 26 if you want to stay in 9mm. Depending on what generation you get the frames will be a little different I would say Gen. 3 or 4 is what you want.

Thanks for the link. I like the looks of the newer generations.

Are there preban magazines for the 26? If so, what is the capacity? How much can they be had for?

I'm with Dirtypacman. Try to get your hands on a Gen3 or (preferably) a Gen4 19 or 26. I've got a Gen4 19 that I can let you shoot if Harvard is at all convenient.

g26 mag capacity is 10 rounds. no pre-ban needed, unless you want to run g19 or g17 mags in it which is kinda defeats the purpose of having really compact handgun.

i personally would not pick g26 because it's a stub of a gun, when i tried it it was very uncomfortable because grip was just to short for me. and i'm not a big guy - 5'8" and don't have shovel-hands either.

length of barrel is beside the point - too short for 9mm to achieve butter-zone velocity not a good thing if you want reliably expand those self-defence hollow points

Gen3 or 4 19 is what you would be looking for. Preban mags are available, although not very cheap or readily available. They are out there if you look hard enough though.

The g19 and g26 are both just as blocky as the 17. If you're hands aren't big enough for a G17 then the G26 won't really fit either. You should look into getting a single stack gun. The Walther PPS is a great gun.

Try before you buy if you can.

This

The M&P's will slim down the grip considerably, if you want smaller, the Shield will be available soon.

The Glock 36, while being a 45 cal, will give you a much slimmer grip than the 17, 19, or 26

Gen 3 or Gen 4 if you could find it G19.

I know what you mean, I have a 1st gen 17 and it is blocky and very slippery. I want the 19 next and it is a very versatile Glock. Most Glock nuts will say that the 19 is the best Glock ever made. The G26 (Baby Glock) is just the subcompact version of the G17 while the G19 is the compact version of the G17. Confusing, yes, but I would try and find someone with a G19 so you could get a feel for it. It should fit your hand better than a 1st Gen G17.

Are you 100% sold on Glocks? There are other pistols out there that could fulfill your criteria better, considering you find the G17 grip too bulky.

Keep in mind if you are planning to IWB this that the Gen4 glocks tend to rub people raw due to the new more aggressive grip texture.

For IWB carry I would go with a Gen3 19 so long as it fits your hand. If the Gen4 fits your hand better with the changable back straps then go with that and worry about the more aggressive texture later, if it bothers you at all. Like others have said, try before you buy

I prefer the finger grooves on the subcompact glocks, but with a fullsize glock I prefer the old Gen 2 style that lacks finger grooves. There are also a lot of reliable police trade-in gen 2 G22's out there for great prices. Finish wear? Certainly. Internal wear? Unlikely.

One more for this! I personally like the g26 gen 4 and it's grip is a bit slimmer and more comfy in my eyes. A glock 19 is cool as well I tend to keep that for range and home, no so much for conceal but def concealabilty
