What is the best .22 Pistol for a newbie?

Ruger Mark III... all day long, the most dependable for the money you will ever buy. Just so much fun to shoot. Heck, think I saw one for sale here for $190.00 yesterday..

s&w model 22 is a decent gun for target shooting or just plinking but as others have said the rugers are good also. it should be something that you can try out and then you can form your own opinion on what is best for you. i had a p22 and had trouble with the sights. the trouble was that anything beyond 50 or 60 feet and it just wasnt accurate and the shots would be all over the target.

Mark II, Mark III, even an old Ruger standard. Relatively low price. Accurate. Long life. Plenty of aftermarket if you feel the need.

Ruger 22/45. If you have or are thinking about getting a 1911 the grip angle is the same as the 1911. Makes for a great practice handgun. Ruger now makes a 22/45 with changeable grip so you can match your 1911. Cheap 22 lr ammo, mine eats anything and likes Walmarts Federal bulk.

ok so lets assume you are looking for sub 500.00 hands down is the ruger mark series. I own a I 11 and III all run great after break in of about 500 rounds.
As stated plenty of goodies in the aftermarket area.
I have the fluted markIII hunter purchased when they came out. I purchased on looks alone. Do not let the hard to take apart thing scare you. Follow the directions and you will have no issues. They are tight the first few times. But there is really no need to tear it down until alot of rounds go through it. I remove grips and just use the spray can gun scrubber when things get dirty.
My all time favorite 22 pistol is the S&W model 41(mine is a early 70s model)

I'm going to vote for the Smith 617 because it looks soooo badass and it's a smith revolver so it will never ever depreciate.

Yep, plus since it's a revolver it eats any brand of ammo without concern of whether it will feed or eject during the firing sequence. Little more dough but it will last a few generations.

Revolver: S&W 617 (Best .22 DA revolver currently available out there)

Semi Auto: Ruger Mk II or III Whichever Variety suits you best. (Hands down most reliable and economical 22 pistol ever)

Another vote for the ruger mk3. Mine has been extremely reliable and accurate. I use it for bullseye shooting, and it'll hold the X ring all day off the bench (I'm not that good, but I have shot a 96/100 slow fire with it and I called the 8). The P22s and Mosquitos I've shot had terrible reliability and the accuracy wasn't on the same page as the ruger either. I'm not familiar with the 22A or the Buckmark, but those might be good choices to. I also own a 617 and a single-six. The single six is a fun range toy, but I wouldn't want it as my only 22. The 617 would be a great beginner gun too, but it's harder to shoot well.

Ruger semi autos are a good choice because of the after market parts. I have seen some beatiful customs made using Volquartson parts.

Any Ruger pistol if you want to do some serious shooting. All of mine have always been 100% reliable with excellent accuracy. For plinking The Sig Mosquito or Walther P22 would be fine. No matter which one you choose, safe shooting.

+1. Seriously, don't bother looking at anything else right now. As a newbie, these are the best choices.

There are 22 conversion kits, P22 and Sig Mosquito, etc. but they're all ammo-sensitive and require special care, break-in, etc. to work well. (Ask me how I know.)

Buy both of these, or one and then the other. You won't regret it.

I shot a Ruger Mark II as a kid along with a S&W revolver of unknown model, both were awesome. I now have a Ruger 22/45 Target model and fell in love the first time i took it out. It's a lot of fun. I'd recommend either the Mark II/III or 22/45 (same thing, just different grips angle, more or less).
