What kind of gun is this?

Me and a friend were in a local gun shop when a guy came in and said he found this in his attic,and would the guys at the shop be interested they declined, so my buddy offered him $50 he gladly took it my buddy just wants it for a wall hanger but I'm curios of the brand or any other info there are no markings exept what's carved/stamped in the stock.

Not cleaning anything going over the fireplace for decoration

1842 Springfield. Maybe Mexican American war vet, or maybe saw confederate use in the civil war. Hence the double inscription, maybe father and son.

There should be a date mark on the tang.

You got quite a deal for $50. Even as it sits. Though someone cut the forend.

Agree, but would expect to see the markings on the lock, even in that condition. It has been modified.
