I'm thinking about adding a rifle to the collection. Not sure what to look for. Budget is under a grand. What is a good caliber that is readily available, and won't break the bank?

I like .308 for maximum long range effectiveness/accuracy. You should be able to find a nice Remington 700 or the likes, but the glass is probably going to be the money part, depending on what distances you want to reach out to.

There are a lot of good calibers though...270, 7mm, 30-06...what are you trying to do with the rifle is the biggest question.

I agree with everything. Which surprises Me because I never agree with anything, with anyone, ever lol

Thanks for the replies. I've seen a Remington 700s around. A couple in 30-06 and one in 7mm. The best looking one was one of the 30-06. It will probably just be target shooting.

If u are just punching paper go with smaller caliber. Less punishing. .243 or .223

If you want smallest groups get a heavy barrel.

No matter what it is all about a good trigger. I prefer older Remington's trigger to newer ones but not complex to upgrade

Nothing really. Just wanting a old school rifle like my grandfather had. Wood stock, scope, leather sling.

I saw a rifle like it at a gun shop a while back and got feeling nostalgic.

Rgr that. I can't help you much in that case.

What to look for?

Accuracy
Reliability
Longevity
Functionality (ease of use)
Quality
Simplicity
Affordability
Looks (nice wood)

Swiss 1931 Carbine Schmidt Rubin K-31 7.5 Swiss Caliber One of the more interesting Military Rifles of all time! These Rifles are world renowned for their Superior Accuracy. The unique straight pull bolt of the K-31 combined with outstanding Swiss craftsmanship make this Rifle highly sought after by Military enthusiasts and collectors alike. Due to the scarcity of the K-31 in the US market, most collectors have been unable to afford the few which have surfaced during the past few years. 7.5 Swiss ammo has been nearly impossible to find! if not id pick up a savage rifle in whatever flavor you like

a nice springfield 1903 would be fun , and it's caliber is still stocked in walmart.

I have a Rem 700 "Tactical" (I hate that word) in 308. Love it. You can easily get them used from GB or AL. Mine has the heavy, shorter barrel but not threaded. Kind of wish it were threaded, but its a good excuse to buy another one. I took it to Colorado last year to shoot with my buddy. 500-600 yards was our max distance available, but it still shot everywhere I put the reticle after getting the scope doped correctly. It was my first time shooting uphill, so it took some getting used to.

I have a Vortex Crossfire II on it. No complaints with it either. They can be found on sale a few times a year and I'm tempted to get another one of them.
