The shooting last night in New Bedford was horrible, no excuses at all for what happened. However.. I'd be curious to see how we would get labeled if anyone got access to our homes.

-"Mr Gunman has an arsenal of weapons including hipowered assault weapons with hicapacity magazines designed to help kill more quickly."

-"Mr Gunman's house was full of equipment and supplies to manufacture home made rounds designed to increase penetration of bullets. Explosive devices were also found."

-"Books on how to win a gunfight and handle weapons more efficiently were included throughout the house where Mr. Gunman's children had access to reading materials."

-"Mr Gunman has been known to attend competitions where shooting at life like targets are common practice."

-Mr. Gunman regulary posts on pro gun web forums. Discussions include the disdain for local politics and LEO policies on gun control laws which are aimed at protecting our society and innocent children."

I can see it....

By taking little snippets of information out of context, and confusing some of the "little" facts ever so slightly, the media can make anybody look like a nut for a variety of reasons, not just gun ownership.

For example - My mother is into houseplants. She grows Poppies and Castor bean plants (among many dozens of others). Therefore, she has the raw materials to make heroin and the deadly poison ricin. Also bomb making chemicals identical to those used by Timothy McVeigh to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

I think you just described just about everyone on this site to a tee.

Yes.. and most of us are completely normal, productive, lawabiding citizens... including LEO and ex-military. It's amazing how the media won't miss the opportunity to taint the image of all lawfull gun owners.

I can't remember that last time something positive was mentioned about the good gun owners... [rolleyes]

Imagine if the POS in New Bedford is or was a member here?

I'm not joking... similar situations have happened on other firearms related forums.

(Note: no suicidal murderers that I'm aware of, but average, previously law-abiding gun owners that have gotten the attention of the ATF/FBI/local police for any number of reasons).

It's called the normal pursuit of a hobby, just like someone who has a garage full of tools and parts to make cars go exceedingly fast or someone who has shelves full of books on how to part people from their money using shady mareketing tricks or how to cheat on their tax liabilities.

I don't expect nor care if the general public likes my hobby....they don't have to participate.

The main reason people engage in discussions about guns and gun control laws and have developed such a disdain for those who make and enforce them is because they are complete bullshit, presented to the public under false pretenses and with an ulterior motive.....they know it and we know it.
Its called free speech and before the internet, it was done at the range, at the gunshop, at work, over a beer at the bar ect. The internet has just made it more convenient for many.
If the sheep can't figure it out for themselves, they'll never understand no matter how or how long you explain it to them.

I can just imagine the local media and especially the mayor's comments about my collection.

.....Over 40 military rifles, some with bayonets, plus military cans full of ammunition!!!.....

Totally ignoring the fact that I have a C&R collector's license and over 95% of my stuff is over 50 years old collectable bolt action rifles with some over 100 years old and the majority of ammo is stuff like 7.5x55 Swiss and 8x56R.

BTW - When was that last time someone was bayoneted to death in the US?

NS!!! I ask people that whenever they talk about the reason for the AWB. They have no idea! Like when was the last time someone used a grenade launcher... or how the collapsible stock is more likely to kill.... good grief.

for that matter, how many people get killed at the pointy end of an semiauto "AW" compared to blunt force instruments?

IIRC a member of AR15.com either did murder some folks or attempted it. I recall the discussion about him, but don't recall any details.

I guess it depends on the circumstances under which the media is talking
about us.

It may not be even as a result of a "gunman" but of something being a whole
lot more innocent:

"Someone at xyz household dialed 911 complaining of chest pains. The EMTs and the
police showed up. When the police showed up they found a large cache of weapons on
the bed inside,.. blah blah blah... etc" (maybe you were cleaning your guns out and
had a heart attack? )

It doesn't take an act of violence for the media to badmouth a gun
owner... especially not in this state.

As far as the media is concerned, the only such thing as a good gun
owner is no gun owner. Even the police often get a ration of shit from the
media when its completely undeserved. This is why any hostility between
civilian shooters and LEOs just seems so bizarre to me... I don't get why
there are ANTI gun LEOs out there. It makes no sense... they lose sight
of the fact that after IANSA takes the peon's guns away, they will start
coming after the policeman's duty weapon as well, leaving them with
nothing but a bat and a can of OC, assuming they can carry that at
all. (maybe a tazer if they're lucky?)

And of course the ones who aren't former military (PTSD-crazed killers who think they're still in the jungle/desert) or active duty police (Racists with badges straight out of Mississippi Burning) are all a bunch of Rambo-wannabes, dreaming of it. Have I mentioned lately that I no longer have the slightest respect for what passes for journalism today?

I'm not familiar with that one.

There was the National Guardsman in an armor unit who wanted to contact Al-Qaeda so he could supply them with info. Then there have been a few members whom have been investigated and/or taken into ATF custody.

Seems like every few months or so, at least one ARFCOM'er has some serious legal issue to contend with.

With such a large membership, there's bound to be a few loose cannons... specially with them thar Texas boys.

True... there are a lot of anti-gun LEOs out there, but by and large, the majority of them are either in a position of rank or aspire to be there.

Then there are those that take their marching orders from the people who sign and renew their contracts... as in CLEOs (as if that they didn't get to where they are in the first place if they didn't share the opinions or agenda of the people who appointed them).

One thing that I find troublesome is the "LEO exemption" inserted into MA (and Federal), gun laws.

If the stated purpose of the EOP list is to ensure that any handguns being sold to civilians in this state meet minimal safety requirements (ditto for Herr Reillys requirements), why wouldn't the same apply to LEOS as well?

The legislature isn't stupid... it's part "divide and conquer", part fear of the police unions and part needing some dept talking head, CLEO, PR lackey to stand next to them at the podium urging the passage of the latest "common sense" gun control bill.

What would you expect from the Media ... after all ... doesn't THE MEDIA use the same tools as CHILD PORNOGRAPHERS!!! Video cameras! Lighting Equipment! Cameras for taking DETAILED, HIGH RESOLUTION, NUDE PHOTOS OF CHILDREN! why, I bet this media even has the same type of equipment that CHILD PORNOGRPAHERS might use to STORE MASSIVE QUANTITIES OF DIGITIZED CHILD PORN FOR GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION!!!!

It's pretty easy ... now you try.

Good God! Someone's got to stop these people! You know, for the children.

I'm all for possession of a camera for taking vacation photos, but nobody needs a high resolution digital camera like the ones used by the military.

People who regularly watch the Weather Channel are 45 times more likely to die of hypthermia OR heat stroke.

While we are all for Repsonsible Journalism , the 1srt ammendment doesn't guaranatee the right to give people dangerous information. We need a little common Sense media law. If it saves just one child ....

I suggest we set up a massive oversight committee to regulate weather broadcasts. And their must be swift and sure punishment for these dangerous prognosticators.

Let's have the Government lie to us ... I mean inform us , of the weather , the only way to be really sure is to delay it - with a background check - for 24 hours. Then , with the proper license of course, authorized citizens can find out what yesterdays weather was.

A basic training course and vetting should be required, as well as a license for any photographic equipment such as cameras, film and memory chips. DIGITAL equipment and photo software should require a separate license, issued by the COP. After all, the local PD know who hangs around the parks, playgrounds and schools, even if there isn't an arrest record.

And don't forget- No film supplies can be shipped into MA!

Now that is pretty damn good.

I'm sick and tired of CBS, CNN, AP and all these other outfits trying to hide behind the 1st Amendment. "Freedom of the Press" my ass. The probably don't have a single printing press between the lot of them, just cameras, word processors, fax machines and other high tech automatic gizmos. Even the NY Times, Washington Post and the Globe don't use real printing presses like those envisioned by the founding fathers, just computer-drived composition and page layout systems and high-speed semi-automatic presses designed to spray out paper as fast as possible with no regard for the consequences. I say freedom of the press for anybody who needs to use a real printing press; the rest of them can stand in line to get printed, photographed and apply for licenses.

How about the great little factoid that most serial killers are white males with above-average intelegence.

"Bobby, sorry to tell you this, but you IQ test came back. It's 180. You have the right to remain silent...."

Remember its for the children!

I just got a wake up call from someone (and he knows who he is) who pointed out something to me that I basically forgot. So, to answer the original question in this thread of what would they think of us? Well...can't speak for the rest of you, but since having my [slap] and having a cold glass of water thrown in to my thought process, my answer is I don't give a flying youknowwhat at a rolling donut what they think.

And thanks youknowwho - I needed that.

Can you let us know what it was that you forgot? You have me puzzled.

Actually, it was a discussion in the Mod's Den. I basically realized that I was willing to become PC in order to keep the anti's from getting their nickers in a twist. I forgot that it won't do any good, so why bother doing something that's gonna wind up giving me an ulcer.

In other words "Who gives a F&*k!"

The Dayton news reporters would shit their pants if they saw what I keep handy for self defense and if they saw how I (and many of the people I know) can shoot.
