When an ar15 kaboom happens is the lower receiver usually damaged? Has there ever been any reports of an ar's barrel splitting?

I saw some photos of one on ar15.com the other day. It did some damage to the bolt, magazine and from what I remember a little bit to the inside of the upper receiver but I don't recall the lower being affected.

I've seen most of those links, but regardless thanks. I am still curious though as to whether the lower receiver is ever really affected or an ar barrel has split during an ar15 kaboom?

You planning on playing a cruel joke on a friend?

I've only personally seen one m16 kaboom once and I don't recall there being any damage to the lower, the mag blew apart but I think the lower was still serviceable.

Unfortunately the AR is nowhere near being as robust as say the M-1. the receiver is basically just an aluminum shell holding everything else in place, until something drastic happens. the Kaboom pics tell the story. they say that rifle was destroyed by a reload that was overcharged. the bolt carrier was split down the middle, which split the upper receiver down the middle as well. the bolt head was left jammed in the barrel. the magazine usually blows out the bottom of the mag well in pieces, swelling the mag well of the lower in the process. I will hazard a guess that the lower did not split, but most likely ballooned outward out past the point of being usable again.
Even steel receivers are not immune. Fortunately I have only had 1 rifle blow in 35 years of active shooting. that was an FN49 in 8mm mauser. The combination of a rusted chamber, and thin walled brass. on firing the 3rd round of commercial Hansen (now S&B) factory ammo, the case was ripped in half at the midpoint. the gas forced the bolt rearward so hard that it struck the rear of the receiver, stretched the receiver rearward and jammed the bolt in place as the receiver sides squeezed in onto the bolt, wrecking the rifle.

That is why I think it is a mistake to hold onto the magazine like a handle the way I've seen some people do.

The damage is a blowout of the mag contents downward. Not to mention the chances of it happening are almost as much as Barrack being elected again.

On thegunzone.com there is a pic of an M1A on there that is literally blown to pieces. Any gun can blow up given bad conditions.

Kids, this is what happens when you use garbage ammo with an AR.... Watch right around the 1 minute mark.
