They still have a separate breech block on the occasional 228 that they sell (they seem to have new production 228s every once in awhile). I think the 226 went to a milled slide when they brought out the fotay version.
I think the newer P228s have all gone milled. I think part of this is because there was never any tooling in the US for them to produce folded slides with.

Hmm. Could be. I thought I read that they were from Germany but that was probably on some forum and, hence, wrong.
Turns out I was wrong.... and you are right. I could have sworn I saw a weird looking P228 slide, though.
This guy's P228 is new, and it's clearly a folded slide, as you suggest.

I just pick up a 220 circa 1989 and in comparing it to my new 220, aside from that annoying rail (which you can't seem to buy a new 220 today without the damn thing) they switched to an external extractor as well plus it came with seven round mags.
Take the slides off both, and weigh them. The new one will probably be a bit heavier. The old design was more lightweight and made the gun handle better... and they really weren't any less durable. The change was just a matter of tooling and manufacturing processes changing over the years.
