I'd like to purchase a Shotgun for Home Defense, and hope I never use it.

But I certainly want to shoot it a few times for purposes of getting familiar with it.

I understand Indoor Ranges forbid them.

I live in Essex County.

Welcome to the forum! Depending on your timing a NES shoot is an awesome opportunity to try a number of different guns...... Awesome time and great folks....[wink]

A local gun club may have trap shoots that are open to non members. At my Club (Andover Sportsmans) there is a very friendly bunch of trap guys who may be willing to let you try out their shotguns.

You also my want to check with Bob's in Salisbury. You might be able to rent a 12 gauge and try it on their range.

Keep looking at clubs. Shotguns are a tough one, but there are a lot out there depending on where you're willing to travel.

You can get a permit for the range at the wma up in rowley. It's bassically just a sand pit and a cleared swath of woods where you can chuck some clays but it does the trick in a pinch.

Does Cape Ann Sportsmen's in Gloucester still allow the public on the outdoor range Sunday Mornings for a small fee?

From their website:
[h=3]04/10/11 through 12/11/11 - Outdoor Rifle Range Public Shooting[/h]
  • The outdoor 100yd rifle & pistol range will be open to the public on Sunday morning from 9AM until Noon (except during scheduled clinics or matches). Any rifle, pistol, or shotgun (except full automatic) may be used. Target frames will be supplied for use with rifle, pistol, and rifled-slug only. If you wish to pattern a shotgun, you will need to bring your own target frame. Bring any other equipment and supplies you will need. Eye and ear protection is required. Shooters will be required to sign a waiver, and obey the commands of a Range Safety Officer. Juniors, under the age of 18, must be accompanied by a duly licensed adult. The cost is $20 for adults and no charge for juniors. For more info, email to Public Shooting Info.

Whatever you find, I would encourage you to shoot it more than a few times. Shoot it regularly so that you are familiar with it. These skills can atrophy with disuse.
