Looking for a .22lr pistol for my 17 year old daughter to learn and shoot with. Been leaning towards the venerable Ruger MK series for their reliability (should never have sold the MKIII I had afew years back!) and what about the plastic gun, their SR22? How about the Sig Mosquito. I'm a Sig guy myself and own eight of 'em but I heard stories of functioning issues, regardless of how hot the .22 load is. Another choice would be the Walther P22, but don't know much about them. Any thoughts out there? My oldest is really interested and my other are on her coat tails but wanting to learn more about archery. Anyway, help is always appreciated and I want to spend my kizzash wisely. Thanks to all, happy holidays.

I love the mosquito I bought my son a few years ago. No real issues with feeding or anything. We use the CCI high velocity and a day at the range with that stuff is cheap especially compared to his tastes now which include AK's, 45s, and a Beretta 92. [smile]

ruger sr22 is a good gun for a beginner. eats everything, inexpensive, good ergonomics, including small hands.
i would suggest to use standard velocity in it instead of high.

i would strongly suggest to stay away from p22.

I have a Ruger SR22 and it has ate everything I've put into it without a problem. Fun gun to shoot and accurate especially for new shooters.

Another vote here for the SR22. Mrs. marvelshooter has one with a very small laser on the rail and it is a blast to shoot. Very reliable and accurate.

I would suggest a Ruger SR22 - it shoots anything, is easy to rack the slide and to take apart and get back together. It also fits my hands very well (I'm an average size female). I've had 2 Mark III's and ended up getting rid of them out of frustration getting them put back together.

I always wonder why there is no love for the 22 revolver. A nice S&W or Ruger is a joy to shoot and will just eat any ammo without complaining.

.22 revolver is more money than semi, and trigger pull is much heavier as well. Personally, I like the Ruger LCR .22 a lot, only if I can find an used one for less than $300

Exactly. It doesn't get any more basic than this. Perfect way to start out IMOHO

I personally dislike revolvers because of their visual appearance, awkward grip layout, high bore axis and the fact that darn thing is 200 y.o. on tuesday.
i love semi-autos - they represent evolution in gun design and marvel of 20 century engineering. revolvers have reached end of the road of their potential. while semi-autos get re-invented every 50 years and improved for the past almost 150 years. And there is no end in sight. they also offer tremendous flexibility in meeting narrow or broad spectrum of applications, can be adopted to a variety of ammo, unlike revolvers that are stuck with certain types of cartridges. and lets not forget round capacity that surpass any revolver 3 to 4 times.
not to say that revolvers has met their maker, and there are certainly areas where they perform very well, but something about new and old makes people tend to lean towards new.

Just bought my 24 yo daughter an SR22. Great choice.

FYI I have a Sig Mosquito. Bought it because I do like my Sigs. But this is not traditional Sig build quality at all. It is finicky on ammo.

I got my daughter the SR22P with laser and she LOVES it. She thinks the laser is so cool.

And, yes, she has her LTC-A no restrictions. Got it when she was 21. The COP in our town is very gun friendly.

Wow! You really hate revolvers [laugh]

I have a P22 and love it. Of course it is a little fussy with ammo, but CCI Blazer is easy to find and cheap enough. I got it to match my two P99s. Mag release is same, and feel is similar.

With that said, I have talked a friend of mine into getting the SR22. She has an unrestricted LTC-A, and has shot all three guns. She does like to shoot the P22, but re-assembly with the pin is ridiculous. If it was a tool-less reassemble, it would be great. The SR22 is a better gun, but for me, the P22 makes more sense.

I love revolvers. I was going to suggest a Ruger Bearcat, Single Six or Single Ten.
I have Stainless Single Six, 5.5" barrel with 22lr and 22mag cylinders. It is one of my all time favorites.
You semi-auto guys would never understand...

Hey folks,

Thanks for the great replies and helpful advice. It'll probably be a Ruger SR22 for semi to start with a revolver in the picture afterwards. All three of my beautiful girls want to get into the sport, especially the oldest. Can't wait to get them on the plinking range for some reactive fun ! Thanks again and happy holidays!!!!!!

My P22 chomps cheap ass bulk 22 with no problems. I have a buddy who has a p22 and has the same experience. It will eat anything. They are a mofo to take down and reassemble though... no doubt about that... I also don;t care for the mag release on the trigger guard. I may get an SR22 after the holiday. Then I could tell you which of the two is better - from the standpoint of owning both.

How about you bring her to a gun shop and see what she likes. A gun that's perfect on paper is going to be useless if she doesn't like it. Find something that she likes, that feels good in her hands.
