Why .40 cal?

I have primarily owned 9mm because of how inexpensive it is to shoot but I am in the market for a new carry pistol and I would like to step up in caliber to either 40 or 45. I had the opportunity to shoot both (M&P.40 fs and .45 Sig) and I found the .45 much easier to shoot, less recoil and more accurate. I know the pistols have a lot to do with it but in researching the physics, the data suggests that the .45 should be easier to shoot mostly because of the slower velocity. If this is true, what is the case for .40cal? Why not skip from 9mm to .45?
