Drew,
Any one can attend, and although it is not enforced, a shooter is limited to shooting one match before they join IDPA.

If you are new to this style of shooting it would be a good idea to watch a match before trying to shoot one. Often, depending on your experience, the SO will assign an experienced IDPA shooter to help you through the first match.

E-mail/Pm Articelf, he is the IDPA Co-Chair at the Worcester club, I’m sure he will take care of you.

Respectfully,

I think if you're going to make the trip out to a match, you may as well shoot. Just realize that you're not going to be competitive out of the gate. Take your time and focus on safety and accuracy; speed will come later. That's what I did at the January WPRC match (my first match), and I had a great time.

I'd recommend skimming through the rulebook (available at idpa.com) and watching a few youtube videos of matches to get an idea of what to expect.

Equipment wise, you'll need a handgun of 9mm or 38 special, or larger, a couple of magazines/speedloaders, and a strong side belt holster. One or two magazine carriers would be helpful, but I shot my first match with mags in my pockets.

Drew,
I saw in one of your posts that you are a firearms instructor and I would guess that your gun handling/safety skills are pretty good. I’d take Jar’s advice and show up at the Worcester shoot with your equipment (firearm unloaded if possible).

There will be a table that you can handle your firearm but no ammo will be allowed at that table. You will not be able to handle your firearm any where else or at any other time except when told to do so by an SO.

Tell them you are a new shooter to IDPA and they will explain the basics. Be safe and enjoy.

I say this to all the new shooters... and some on the not so new shooters as well.

1) Keep the muzzle down range or on target
2) Keep you finger off the trigger unless you are ready to shoot (example- not when reloading)

If you stick to these basic rules... you will always be welcome!!!

EDIT (This is just one IDPA SO's opinion... I'm not an WPRC member)

For folks who carry their gun too/from competitions: Please keep your gun loaded and when you arrive ask an SO to escort you to a safe place to clear said gun.

I don't want anyone to think they need to unload a carry piece in their car, or that we don't want them arriving with a loaded gun.

Of course all MA laws should be followed.
