WTS CONTEMPORARY VIRGINIA FLINTLOCK .58 CALIBER LONGRIFLE PACKAGE
LOCATION:
PITTSFIELD, MA

DESCRIPTION:
CONTEMPORARY VIRGINIA FLINTLOCK LONG RIFLE PACKAGE

WITH ENGRAVED POWDER HORN, WAMPUM STRAP AND RIFLEMAN’S TOMAHAWK

This is a Contemporary Virginia Long Rifle signed by the maker, Gun Builder Ed Wenger of Catlett, Virginia. It is not based on any particular school, although the wide butt, straight comb and wood patch box would indicate an earlier rifle. It has Germanic style brass furniture suggesting the Valley and Piedmont areas of Virginia. Incised molding runs the length of the fore stock to the entry pipe, and on the toe of the butt stock. There is raised carving around the tang, wrist area and behind the molded cheek piece. An apple blossom design is engraved on the wear plate and trigger guard bow. Engraving is also present on the top flat of the butt piece, the rifle toe plate, and the lock plate.

The rifle is stocked in premium curly maple that has very nice curl throughout the entire piece, and it is finished with Aqua Fortis stain and varnish/oil that enhance the curl and give it a warm, subtle appearance. The barrel is a Getz 44-inch long .58 caliber rifled barrel with swamped profile. A “White Lightning” vent liner has been installed to provide quick, positive ignition. The lock is an Early Ketland by Chambers, and the trigger pull is very smooth making this rifle a pleasure to shoot. There is a small bark inclusion located above the side plate, and a small blemish just behind the tang.

The Powder Horn is custom made, engraved and signed by Contemporary Longrifle Association Artisan Mike Hawkins. The replica Wampum Powder Horn Strap is similar to the one worn by Hawkeye in “Last of The Mohicans,” but with a pattern of crosses, made by Artisan Gary Bertelsen.

The Trade Axe style Rifleman’s Tomahawk is made and signed by former CLA Artisan Henry Augustinus. It has a forged iron head, a Pioneer Valley tiger maple haft fitted with a vegetable tanned leather grip, and is sewn with artificial sinew and attached with brass tacks. It sports a porcupine quill and white glass bead drop. Total Tomahawk weight is approximately 1-1/2 pounds.
