I live in Norwood and am looking for a place within an hours drive for a 1 night trip. Need to get away for a day or so. Not looking for a long hike in, maybe a couple of miles. Any ideas would be helpful.

DCR, maybe? I know a lot of the State Forests in Central and Western MA, but not so much in your area. Out here you can hike/trek/ski year round, and many DCR trails are snowmobile accessible. Not sure if you'll be hassled if you set up camp, though. Technically, the Environmental Police are responsible for that enforcement, and patrols are pretty spotty. Some EPOs are lax. I call the local EPO here if I want to camp on state property outside of designated camping areas.

Here the DCR site. Wish I could be more helpful.

What is MDC?

massachusetts department of conservation. its state land but usualy has tons of big areas where you can bushwack off the trail and be completley alone. I grew up in Barre ma and probably hald the own is mdc land the rail trail goes through a lot of it and there are plenty of spots to camp off the beaten path in those areas

It's DCR. Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. MDC used to be Metropolitan District Commission. Something else entirely. DCR manages state Forests and Parks. There are also lands and trails managed by the Trustees of the reservations and Mass Audubon that you might want to look into.

well i guess i am just old school and still call it what they use to call it

Actually, DCR used to be DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation). It changed sometime after 2000 when some state rep's cousin needed a big contract to print new letterhead and make up new signs for the state.

But that's not really helping this guy out.

My best suggestion is to get a winter trail map from the DCR website, find the remotest nearby facility, and snowshoe a mile in, then a few hundred yards of the trail. Worst that can happen is some EPO finds you and runs you out. And that's unlikely.

Thanks for the replies. There are a few parks that are open that I'm considering. I may also just start walking in one of the local state forests and find a spot. Don't think to many people will be around.

There's a few of us that do winter camping but that's out in Irving and on private property. Many a beer can has frozen solid on those trips. If you're going local let us know how you made out, I am always looking for good spots for a camp out.

Running into a bit of a tight schedule. I'm going to attend the rally at the statehouse on Saturday. Maybe I'll just camp out at the common!
