Hey all, been having problems with my 10/22. It has been light striking the primers and only setting off about 20% of the rounds. I bought the rifle new and have put maybe 5k rounds through with no problems.
Things I have tried so far:
2 different barrels---no difference (I figured might have been a headspace issue)
The original and a power custom firing pin----no difference
Two different trigger packs (for lack of a better word) original factory one and a volquartsen one.

Anyone have any suggestions? At this point I'm thinking of sending it back to ruger. (along with my mk3 22/45 with its myriad of problems) I'm 0/2 with ruger products so far[rolleyes]

Thanks guys.

Same brand of ammo?

I'm guessing all those changes were unnecessary and it's probably an ammunition issue.

Ah, sorry forgot to mention. Tried winchester, CCI, aquila, and federal ammo, noticed improvement. The firing pin is actualy leaving a slight indent on the rim but not nearly as deep as it should.

Check your firing pin. you may find that the back end of it (where the hammer strikes it) is peened over. It's about a $4 part from Ruger, and it takes about 3 minutes to replace. Just drive out the retaining pin and replace the firing pin, being careful to make sure the spring is in the right place.

I replaced the oringinal firing pin with a new one with the same results. Any other thoughts?

Weak hammer spring?

Uh... just a thought here. Check the chamber and be sure there's no dents in the rim. Shouldn't be; the firing pin design precludes it denting the rim, but check anyway.

By "trigger pack" do you mean you replaced the entire trigger system, housing and all. As in, bang out two pins, put the new pack in place and put the two pins back in? Or did you replace the components individually?

It sounds like the spring isn't in correctly in the housing, causing the hammer to light strike.

Thanks guys.

I have a spare bolt assembly you can borrow if you want...and a spare trigger group.

Is the bolt not going all the way into battery?

+1

I get the same issue with a Marlin 60 if it doesn't go quiiiiiite fully into battery, which happens sometimes when I manually cycle it with CB caps, especially if it's really dirty. Time for carb cleaner and a stiff brush?

Good call. The problem turned out to be an aftermarket extended bolt handle/recoil spring assembly. The spring was not powerful enough and thus held the bolt ever so slightly out of battery. I can't believe I did not notice the slight space between the bolt and barrel all the times I looked at it. Well anyways thank you guys for the help.

that's what i use in both of my 10/22's. Did you remove that little pin in the guide rod? You're supposed to. That will DEFINITELY stop the gun from going into battery. It's only there to help you install it and hold it together during shipping.

More 10/22 problems

This post was timely. I had a similar problem today with light strikes. I will need to work on it this week and see if any of the suggestions work. However, had another problem, when I tried to pull the bolt back, it would only go back about a half inch or so. After trying it a few times and then hitting the side of the stock with my hand I found I could pull it all the way back. It happened 3X with two different magazines both Ruger stock parts, one brand new. Anybody have any suggestions?

Yes the pin was removed when I installed it.

It had to be installed wrong then, like I said, both of mine were perfect, order at 2 different times. One is on a 1979 Ruger 10/22 and the other is on a 2007 Ruger 10/22. Something just can't be seated correctly. Maybe the barrel isn't all the way in or something? Next NES shoot if you go and I go I'll take a look at it for you if you want.
