Anybody have any easy solutions for my problem? I can shoot it fine with open sights but love scopes. The front screw is stripped and if I continue to use it like that the rears will strip eventually. There was only one screw in the front. There is a common headed set screw right behing the barrel that I guess is to hold the barrel in place so I suppose I can't use that hole.

i could imagine you could tap it a tiny bit larger as well and just drill out the mount if you weren't game for taking it to a gun shop. the threads and screws are so tiny so i am waiting to run into this problem with my 10/22 as well.

Dave Santori in Attleboro can fix the problem and appears to be near where you live

I had one retapped - be careful, the threads are not commonly found in machine shops - I forget the thread #'s - a gunsmith should be able to help you or at least guide you.

Good luck

I believe that they are #6-48 screws.
Could be tough to repair, as there is not a whole lot of thread there...

I think you're right Steve - I'm not sure if he opened up the hole re-tapped or not.

IIRC - the rail was installed with blue locktite and has been there since.

Now that I think harder on it, I think he added a hole to allow a shorter rail - I'll have to check what's going on there as it's been too long since that gun has been out for a run...

The receiver has four attachment points, and with the proper rail you can use all four. Nothing on the top of the receiver secures the barrel.

Why not just drill all the way through and re-tap the holes
Then just buy 4 new screws that are the proper length so they don't interfere with the movement of the bolt.

I want to get a manual for disassembly so I can do it myself if a gunsmith cannot do it in a couple of weeks.

There are all kinds of assembly/disassembly videos on youtube. You could probably get a manual direct from Ruger if you call or e-mail them. If you are relatively close to me (I'm near BassPro) and want to take it apart, I would be happy to assist. I have taken mine apart several times to replace factory parts, so I am pretty familiar with the rifle. I am available almost anytime, so if you'd like my help , just drop me a PM. I will bring my manual and maybe you could copy the relevant parts.
