I took my M&P .40 Shield out on Saturday and shot just over a hundred rounds through it. I used 165 gr & 180 gr target loads and a couple JHP, hydra-shocks.
I have the Apex trigger installed (very nice).
I had 3 issues with the gun during shooting
1). My son was with me, his first shot ejected the casing but didn't pick up a new round from the magazine. I blamed it on 'limp wristing' the recoil. He chambered a new round and everything worked fine. This was his first shot and he was a bit nervous. He has fired a 1911 in the past without issue.
2). My son had a weak primer strike and the round did not fire. I manually ejected the round and later loaded it back in. It fired fine the second time. Winchester 165 gr (Dicks $44/box of 100)
3). I loaded 7+1. When I fired the first round the magazine ejected and the spent casing tomb-stoned in the ejection port. When I pulled the action back the round flipped over and went into the chamber backwards. I had to field strip to get the casing out of the barrel.
-- I loaded 7 rounds into the 7 round magazine, chambered a round. I then released the magazine, added a 7th round back to the top and put the magazine back into the handle. Maybe I didn't seat the magazine all the way in. I don't know.
-- I tried a 7+1 the second time and noticed that the magazine went in very hard when fully loaded with one in the chamber. I made sure it seated properly and didn't have any issue firing off all 8 rounds.
All in all, I love the .40. It wasn't as snappy as I was lead to believe.
I fired off 13 rounds in rapid succession (for me at least, I'm a beginner) and managed to get all 13 into a 8.5x11 target from 20 feet. I'm pulling high left, need to work on that.
I'm amazed at what a JHP Hydra will do to a watermelon! 20' away and I was hit by watermelon pieces. Better than a sledgehammer!
Now I think I'll pick up a full sized M&P .40
