I always say buy what you are comfortable shooting. Too many people say you have to buy a P22 as your first pistol. Bull. Buy what you want. Shoot what you want. If you want to buy a nice 44mag as your first gun or as your 5th gun, go ahead. Either way, the M29 or Ruger make very nice 44mags.

Ruger IMHO, will last longer. THey are built like tanks.

Yes! The very early Dan Wessons made in Monson, MA all look this way...mine is a four digit serial number. My understanding is that whatever blueing they used at the time turned this color over time. People call them "plum-framed" Dan Wessons.

If you love recoil, then you should look into 500 S&W, 460 S&W or 454 Casull. 44 mag recoil will felt like .22lr.

Thanks for the insight... Would still like to find a local supplier that I could rely on in the next few months.... Just picked up a box of 50 for $39.99.. Ouch, but I still love shooting it
 
$12 to rent a .44 mag at AFS. They have a sweet Model 629, six incher IIRC. Really tames the recoil, although you won't mistake it for a .22.....

Ammo is pricey, yes, but AFS doesn't rip you off.

Have fun with that .44.
