Looking at the 6.5 swede for my next rifle. I have experience with the 223 and the 308 mostly in rifles. Wondering how the swede stacks up. Seems like it would be a good choice for hunting in Maine, and Wyoming if I ever get out there.

its a fine round for sure, but if i was going for an in between cartridge i would suggest the .243 win. 6mm projectile, lots of great brass and components available, chambered in many fine rifles, and commercially available.

Probably one of the most accurate calibers out there. They are the consummate "tack driver".

BTW, nice "Berner"!

I have an M38 short rifle that I sportorized a few years back. Tack driver is as good a description as it gets. This thing is amazing at 100yds, I have never really shot it and any longer ranges. Ballistics are close to a 270 winchester and just one sweet rifle to shoot with an incredibly smooth action...

Have you considered other 6.5's, i.e., the 6.5 creedmoor or .260 rem or even 6.5 x 47 lapua? These have great resale value over on sniper's hide. Just a thought for you. I am in the process of having APA build me a 6.5 creedmoor in an AICS AX chassis. Everyone seems to praise the cartridge. Good article on 6.5's here: http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-shootout-260-6.5x47-6.5-creedmoor/ Also, given the OAL of the 6.5 swede, I assume you will only use it in a bolt gun. And you may have to reload for it. My recollection is that it is most closely related to the .260 rem, which is gaining popularity these days, and I believe the 260 can do pretty much what the 6.5 swede can do, with higher pressures and a little shorter case length. Anyway, lots of options for you to consider in the 6.5 class and you probably cannot go wrong.

So finding a left handed swede looks like it is a little easier than finding hen's teeth....
I went to the LGS yesterday to see if they had any CZ 550's to see how they pointed, and they did! in 6.5 Swede! (mannalicher stock to boot!) Except right handed (boo!)

I called Tikka and they have none to speak of in America.

So it looks like my options are mostly to look and wait for one to come around used...

So my question is -- Is the swede worth it? Is it worth the hassle?

Or should I just go with a 270 or 308?

Seems as though Ruger made the No 1 and the M77 in 6.5 Swedish, but I can't swear to this. As for left-handed...?
Ammo is fairly readily available, more so, if you reload.
Although I have two m96s, I don't hunt, but they out-shoot me, even at 100 years old! (the rifle, that is!)
