I noticed some comparisons here with the 270 vs 308 and was wondering how the 7mm08 and the 270 win compare. I like the short action of the 7mm08, but the 270 win seems to be more readily available atleast around here (se N.H.)and the price for the same type of ammo seems to favor the .270. It won't be my long range (for around here N.H./Me.) rifle, that will be my 270WSM.Also I am not worried about the reloading aspect of them.
Thanks, Bill

I see 7mm08 all the time at walmart. Supposed to be a great and economical long range cartridge.

If you have the long range covered, how about 6.8 in an AR?

That, or 30-30 lever action.

No clear winner here

I have been a long time .270 fan My first rifle was a .270 and since I have always had at least two in the safe over almost 40 years. That said I did pick up a 7mm-08 and am having fun with it. Newer bullet construction allows lighter bullets for deer so go with 120 in 7mm-08. I would not take standard 145 grain in 7-08 over 130 in 270

That said if just for deer I am currently liking 85 grain Hornady GMX in .243 win. Factory ammo for 243 available everywhere

Either way not a bad choice

Sierra makes 90gr HP and Barnes make 85gr in 270, so that rig can pull double duty as a varmint slayer, a full case of RL17 will yield 4000 FPS with my 28" 11 twist.

All three cartridges are very capable at long range. Any one of them candles out the other two.
For the best all-around cartridge of the three? I'd have to say 7mm-08, just because I like the selection of bullets better.

You are right about the better selection of 7mm bullets, but with it's 45gr capacity anything over 150gr is going to be traveling less than 2600 fps, that is way to much bullet drop for me.

Dean

PS: those 85gr and 90gr also work well in my 270WSM, I will not say how many FPS you would not believe me.
